Inspired by the "will good looks hurt you" thread, and the "my secondary photo is a shirtless picture" thread, we may as well have a post your secondary picture thread.

So, post your picture, and be complimented and/or ridiculed!

For Columbia, I used the 2nd. Any time the image they want is small, I use the 2nd one, because the 1st one looks way too small when it is passport-sized. If a college accepts a slightly larger one, I'd probably use the 1st one.

For optional photos, I plan on including one. Couldn't hurt!

Well, no. Not unless you're too lazy to get dressed up to take a photo of yourself. Then again the only one I've sent in without a pic is GWU. I guess I'll include one for Case and of course for Columbia and whoever else wants to see my mug.

Secondary pictures definitely don't have to be done in a suit. People put too much stock in them when they really don't mean much. That is to say, it still has to look decent but don't get worked up if it's not in a suit. I used a regular photo of me taken one summer and it worked just fine. Focus on more important parts of your application.

The American health care system is definitely in trouble if we intentionally pick our doctors based on looks haha (there probably is a subconscious effect on admissions based on looks though). Just be honest and you'll be fine.

I don't plan on wearing my suit although I do plan on wearing a shirt and tie. The reason is that I only have one suit and I don't want to have a pic of me in the same attire I'll be wearing when I sit down for my interview.

Here's a trick... if you crop 6 2x2 pictures together, you can print them on a standard 3x2 photo and cut it out yourself... this is usually a lot cheaper than trying to find a place that prints 2x2 photos. It took me 3 app cycles to figure that one out.

To OP: the second picture is much better.
It gives a better head shot, and the first picture, partially because you were sitting down, make the back of your suit move away from your shirt. Gives the impression that your suit doesn't fit very well.

I just got a picture taken (you can take it yourself with a digital camera or use another one and scan it) and then took that photo, edited it in Paint so there were rows of 3x2 and then printed it on a photo printer onto 3x2 photo paper. This saved a lot of money. You could also take the image somewhere after you've made the 3x2 and they can print it for you. Still cheaper than trying to get individual 2x2 photos.

As for the content... I would try to do a pretty simple profile picture. I wouldn't cut out an action shot or anything but it doesn't have to be professional. You can have a friend take your picture in front of a plain wall and do the rest yourself. Just make sure it looks good enough that you wouldn't mind them making subconscious judgments on it.

Seeing all of these posts...I think I took it too seriously- using an actual passport photo (wearing a black shirt- you can only see the neckline in the photo). It's definately not my best picture but it shows that I'm a normal looking person. Should I retake one that looks more formal?

I did something similar. I didn't already have a good photo to use, so I went to Kinko's and had them take two sets of passport photos of me, then I laid all four passport photos down on their Sony photo scanner machine (they have a special machine that lets you scan in material - like depakote said, you could bring your own photo) and had it print off my four photos into one regular sized photo. Then I used their paper cutter and cut them back into individual passport photos. Each photo sheet of four I printed out was about twenty-five cents. So, you can print out a lot pretty cheaply.

Otherwise, if you go to a Walgreens or a passport photo place, they'll charge you closer to $13 per set. Of course, this method is only cost-effective if you need a lot of photos for a lot of apps. I've found that so far, for 16 apps I've used about 5-6 hard copy photos for paper apps, and about 4 online photos for online apps so far. So, I probably didn't need 20 photos for my 20+ apps. Then again, I've read on here somewhere that some places ask you to bring a photo to your interview, so hopefully I will need more after I finish sending apps in.

I haven't taken mine yet, but I just dyed my hair and wanted it to fade a bit first, it's too dark now.
