Smartness doesn't correlate with your MCAT (Comlex, USMLE, etc) score my friend.

U should say in the title that only DO applicants should vote.

6 36+'s? Common thats complete bs

Yea, I'm inclined to agree. Although there ARE quite a few SDN users who have scored 35 or better; I'm not sure many of them spend a lot of time in the DO forums.

Anyway, it's just a stupid internet poll.

Yeah, really. Sometimes I come onto the DO forum just to see what's going on. I don't know much about DO's and this is a good way to learn. But if you want to use this as a gauge of DO applicant MCAT scores, you ought to put that into the title. I have a feeling this is why your poll is skewed.

Point number one.

MCAT score does not equal intelligence. Standardized tests scores reflect your ability to take a standized test, which is a very particular skill. One of the cool things about osteopathic school is that they embrace this idea.

Point number two.

I'm one of the lucky people who happens to be good at this standardized type of BS. I got a 38. I'm proud of that score, but I'll be even more proud of getting accepted into the awesome tradition and community of osteopathy.

Discard your assumptions and preconcived notions. Be a doctor that puts people first. Be a DO. No MD-DO comparisons needed. Yeah baby!

I kind of think that this poll is including some MD applicants (based on the disporportionately high scores). I want to see scores that don't include MD applicants, so I posted another poll. I am personally not applying MD and I got a 33. What about everyone else? If you only applying DO go take the other poll!

I'm Applying DO and MD, and got a 31. What is up with 18 people scoring 36+? yeah right.

I think this poll says more about the general populous of SDN than it does about a DO school applicant.

As an undergrad, I didn't even know about this site untill well after I took the mcat. Most people who post here are either medical students or very serisous premeds. I'd expect their scores to be higher than the general average b/c of the amount of time they spend focusing on their medical career as opposed to the avg medical school applicant.

I still don't believe that there are so many high scores amongst the DO applicants. The average MCAT at DO schools is around a 24-25. Those higher end scores are just a little fishy for DO...even among us OCD ones who hang out on SDN too much! 🙂

I do know of several SDN DO applicants and students, myself included, who have high mcat scores.

I agree. But newyorkcougar is also correct. The average MCAT score for DO matriculants is ~24.7

I am surprised at the number of anti DO coments in this string. Why the need for the MD comparison?

Come on. If they embrace that idea then why do they require you to take the MCAT at all? Why is it even used as a criterion in DO admissions? Do you think a DO school wouldn't jump on the chance to get an applicant with a 38 MCAT score over one with a 23 and tons of extracurriculars? Although I agree that one can be extremely intelligent and do poorly on a multiple choice test, I think it would be pretty hard for a person of low intelligence to score extremely well.

Are you saying that you need to be a DO to be a doctor that puts people first? Does something intrinsic to the MD degree itself preclude concern for one's patients?

Come on. Each physician is an individual. The majority of MDs have great concern for all of their patients and put the patients need first. The majority of DOs are intelligent, competent physicians. But, if you don't want people to continue to perpetuate the attitude that DOs are intellectually inferior, you shouldn't be pushing the myth that MDs are compassionately inferior either. Individual experiences are about individual doctors and cannot be extrapolated to the vast majority of physicians who are MDs.

I've heard this before, but I find it eeringly true. SDNers are a bunch of academic "freaks." Not the norm, so I'm not surprised to see that 18 peepz scored 36+, but hey, it is an internet poll. Who really cares.

It's not that 18 people scored 36+ that seems peculiar, but that almost 9% of the people who took the poll scored in the 97th+ percentile. Hmmmm. 😉

But yeah, who cares. 😀

Remember, this pole only represents the people who are members of SDN. It may be that there are high scores at SDN because we represent students who are more competitive and look to this forum to validate our superiority.... well maybe I am going a bit far, but you see my point.

Also, the MCAT score doesn't equal future success as a physician. The reason why the DO schools use it is to rate a students ability to take a standardized test. The MCAT is a good indicator of a students future success on the USMLE and other tests required for graduation.

We should argue the validity of standardized tests in another forum... even MENSA questions the ability of the IQ test to determine a person's intelligence.
