AA is calculated by adding the RC, QR, BIO, CHEM, OCHEM scores and dividing them by 5. if you have a 21.6 average, it will round it up to 22, and if you have 21.4, then it is 21. Gotcha?

But see what the effect of this is using one example :

If you have a total added score of 108 , you get 21.6 average and this will round you up to 22. Even if you have 4 more points and get 112, it is still 22 because you will get 22.4!!!!! And Just one more point from 112 will get you a 23 because you will have 22.6 and this will get you 23! That means, if you are unlucky, even 4 more points can get you the same AA, and if you are lucky, even one more point can increase your AA.

Wow this AA score really depends a lot on luck!!!!!! 4 points are a lot (difference b/w Bio 18 and Bio 22!!!), and yet you can get the same AA depending on luck. This sucks because AA is the most important score the Dental schools are looking for.

It also sucks to realize that I was a victim of this rounding off policy.
😡

Tell us what your actual average score (with the decimal) is, and the rounded-off version.

BTW, here are the results I have calculated:

Total score :AA
-----------------
93-97: AA 19
98-102: AA 20
103-107: AA 21
108-112: AA 22
113-117: AA 23
118-122: AA 24

Yeah I was on the borderline too. I realized I missed a really dumb question the next day when I had enough sleep, then calculated what I would've gotten, and that one question would've boosted both my AA and TS by one point.

You know the schools look at each section right? AA just gives them the big picture all in one shot.

yeah I know that. but the AA is the "most" important score among the several scores. And that score is what the schools report to AADSAS

Yes but remember that (mathematically speaking) just as many applicants have had their AA score 'rounded down' than those who have had it 'rounded up'. While you may have gotten an XX.4 rounded down to an XX, several others are in the same boat.

If you had a 19.4 rounded to a 19, remember that there ARE still people out there with a 20.4 rounded to a 20 and not a 21. I think the schools know that a 20 means 19.6 through 20.4.

yeah I know what you mean man. And thanks for your positive words. :luck:

But it still sucks to be among the 20% of people who have been rounded down from 0.4 to 0 when one more point would have made a big difference(having one more total point would give an AA that is the same as someone who has 5 more total points. But without it, it will give an AA the same as someone who has 4 lower total points. One point changes the unluckiest guy to the luckiest guy and vice versa, if you are in the borderline).

I wouldn't really worry about it too much schools also care if you did well in all your sections rather than in 1 section compared to another.

Also don't forget about your grades and extracuricular activities!!! If you have shadowed hundreds of hours or have an amazing gpa it will make you stand out!

The DAT is just one part of a multi-part criteria, dont worry about the one point or rounded point, admission committees aren't blind or stupid they can see the difference from your total score.

"98-102 = 20."

well i got right on 100, so i'm smack dab in the middle. no bad luck, no good luck. either way i can't complain. but that would suck if you estimated that you missed an extra point by 1 question.
