Just got back to my apartment; I'm in upstate NY and we are having MAJOR flooding with hundreds of homes under water within a ~10mi radius of my apartment.
As it turns out I live on TOP of the mountain which is nice, however, since most of the major roads, including all 3 Interstates are closed, I didn't have work today.
This afternoon I was stir-crazy and I ended up calling & then walking the 1/2 mile to a nearby high school the Red Cross was using as a shelter. I then spent the rest of the afternoon/evening helping getting people settled/fed/watered/etc.
As it turned out, I spent most of the time working in the gym were we had the elderly & medical patients located. A lot of O2, lot of wheelchairs, several in hospital beds, and a ton of just old & tired people that were evacuated by car, bus and quite a few by Blackhawk helicopters that were landing on the HS football field. Not sure total population of the shelter tonight but the gym had close to 200 cots full.
Needless to say, a great and rewarding afternoon evening helping several hundred people. Right now intending to try to get to work in the AM; but roads are still closed so may end up at the shelter again...
