My pre-pharmacy club has expressed interest in having "Legal Drug Dealers" be our club name because it's "funny". Apparently other pre-pharmacy clubs have done this at other universities or have used this slogan for their club t-shirts. Maybe I am taking this too seriously, but I feel this title is unprofessional, shows immaturity, and not really that funny. I find it kind of embarrassing that pre-pharmacy students actually want to name their club this.

Does this bother anyone else? Perhaps I am taking this too personally because my younger brother suffers an addiction to drugs...

It bothers me too.

Propose an appropriate title and don't give in to peer pressure.

You're taking this as seriously as you should.

I once had a tech call me a drug dealer in the making. I told her that was highly offensive and I wasn't going to take that kind of slur. I prefer pill pusher.

EDIT: It won't stop once you're in pharmacy school, I hear those kinds of jokes regularly.

It's something you're going to have to get used to. Try to develop thick skin (it will only help you in the future) and don't take it personally.

I agree. Unprofessional as a clubs name... funny as a thought! I would joke about it but never consider making it a club name...

You should be able to make a convincing case against that name. Just explain to everyone how unprofessional it is and how it's the opposite impression you want to be associated with your club.

I wouldn't want to be a part of a society called legal drug dealers, especially since it will probably show up somewhere on your school application.

When I was training in the surgical wing at my hospital, a surgeon called me his "drug dealer". I kindly pointed out to him, "legal drug dealer that is" and he smiled and walked away. Doesn't really bother me.

Personally I think it's great. as a joke. But yeah it doesn't serve as a good first impression, it's unprofessional on resumes, and it will attract a lot of people who have no interest in pharmacy (and then God forbid they decide to do pharmacy since we're already so saturated....JUST KIDDING 🙂)

Though, yeah, you should bring that up that it doesn't look good on the application but it can be the motto or slogan of the club or something.

You're kidding that's it's saturated?

"Legal Drug Dealers" - maybe a rap group made up of pharmacists? I dunno. I'm just tossing ideas out there. It's also fairly late at night, so don't expect easy-to-follow logic and proper sentence structures.

👍
They're just words; hilarious ones.

How creative... :meanie: Just tell them the truth... that it's played out and they could think of a better and more funny name than that. It's funny on a shirt or something... but that's probably about it.

You shouldn't us it because it's unprofessional considering the fact that it may appear on your application and resume if you choose. You could probably use it as a slogan to attract more people.

I remember finding it amusing when I was in school but now I think it's embarrassing and tacky.

If a pre-pharmacy club wants to name itself that, I suppose it doesn't matter. It's not like you'll be forced to write "Legal Drug Dealers" on your resume or PHARMCAS. You can just say University of the North Pre-Pharmacy Club (or something).

I do think it's stupid and tacky but not really worth stressing out over. I also roll my eyes at those "Pharmacists do it over the counter" shirts and stuff like that. I suppose that stuff was funny when I was younger but now that I'm older, a parent, supposedly responsible, etc... it just seems silly.

That's a terrible club name, while my family jokes with me all the time about me being a drug dealer and I am OK with that, I'd never be part of a professional or semi-professional group that wanted to call themselves that.

Certified Drug Dealer is better haha😀😀😀😀😀😀

Incredibly, incredibly lame. I cringe when people use that "joke".

Relax. There are jokes for every single profession, and if you get bothered by little things you can't survive working in the pharmacy. Besides "legal" keeps you on the safe side of the law.

Humorous, but quite immature. A sense of humor is nice, but when it comes to representing the future of the profession of pharmacy, I'd rather go with professional.

"Grade A Suppliers"

Legal Drug Dealers, doesn't sound as grade since you drug dealing is often not associated with the cleanliness or purity in terms with their drugs. With varied amount of alterations that are done, from adding foreign substance whether to intensive the effect or to add weight and increase the price of the product.

I don't think it's fair to associate pharmacists with drug dealers. Sure, they technically do that, but...we can't compete, we got the name-brands to generics, all in 100% purity. When you go to the pharmacy you don't need to take out a portable weight to check that you are not being ripped off, nor do you need to look up on the internet' many databases to make sure you are getting a quality product.

And best of all, insurance will cover your supplies, no glocks required. Try that with your "drug dealers".

"Legal Drug Dealers" for a pre-pharm club? If anyone in the group is dealing drugs, there isn't anything legal about it, seeing as how they aren't pharmacists or even pharmacy interns...no different than calling themselves "Assisted Suicide Providers" or "Sex Slave Smugglers". On the other hand, "FUTURE Legal Drug Dealers" would be perfectly okay.🙂

Seriously, it's a little tacky for an official club name. I was the editor of one of my student organizations newsletters, and I gave it a horrificly tasteless name. While it seemed funny at the time, it never made it onto my CV a few years later when it came time to apply for residencies and my first job, lest I give the folks reviewing the applications a reason to question my character.

Play it safe and stick with "Pre-Pharmacy Club".

prepharm?

Eh, who cares. Like 70% of the losers won't get into pharmacy school anyway...

Oh, another school opened? Hell, make that 65%...

How unprofessional. I would be surprised if your college would even allow this "club" to form. It's really rather disgusting... Make a shirt out of it for a fundraiser, not shame the school and have a potentially permanent professional organization named after a joke.

My family goes to Holden Beach, NC for vacations sometimes, and people who own houses there like to name them. Stuff like "Lucky Numbers" (they won the lottery and bought the house) and "Blue Heaven," which is just a blue house. I was tired of the sappy names and decided I wanted to name one something sinister, like "Drug Money." My mom suggested that if I was a pharmacist I could buy a beach house and legitimately name it that.

So that's how I got into pharmacy.

/kidding, although that did actually happen. Also, I told my old cycling coach, a former-hippie type that I was going to try to go to pharmacy school and he said "Oh! So you'll be a drug dealer!" And I was like, well... yup.

At least they are promoting legal dispensing of drugs. Better than the local "street pharmacist".

I agree with most of the people who posted before me. It wouldn't be good as a club name.

I do, however, find it to be humerous. I think that a sence of humor can be a great thing.

For example. Our organization's name is Texas A&M Pre-Pharmacy Society but we often put funny slogons on our shirts. This year we had "Drugs are our lives"

It doesn't bother me at all. But I certainly wouldn't want that to be the title of my pre pharmacy club. And as far as the slurs and jokes go, compared to lawyers, pharmacist have it pretty easy..

according to your sig arent you starting pharmacy school in the fall and will consequently no longer be there? If so, let them worry about it and you go on to enjoy pharmacy school and join a more professional organization, or however else you want to waste your time.
