excuse my potential ignorance, but does anybody know why some schools tend to be so mysterious about publicizing info regarding the number of remaining vs. filled seats?

i've seen the duck and dodge maneuver a couple times on interviews but i don't know whether its school specific or just the "cool thing for adcoms to do." 😎

It sucks if dental schools decided to withhold info from you and it frustrated you. But hey, it happens. Don't stress out

This is my guess: it has to do with the statistic of how many students a school has to accept to fill its class. Lets say a school has to accept 300 students to fill 80 spots versus school b only has to accept 100 students for 80 spots. Schools don't want students to know how unpopular they are.

So when you get to your position (or mine), wanting to know how many spots are taken up we could theoretically count the students if the school was telling us how many spots are taken.

Keep in mind this is my guess. Or an adcom just wants to be cool.

Just an fyi those numbers are listed in the adea guide to dental schools for almost all schools, if you were desiring to know this info for any school just pick up the guide. It us in the first section if the book.

that's totally reasonable...i never thought of it that way. on one of my interviews, the number of "seats that would be opening up" was quoted but not how many seats were filled. eh?

hey thanks guy or gal, but that's not quite what i meant...i'm aware of how many available seats there are for my desired school at the beginning of the cycle...that's public info...i was alluding to the fact that many schools have been cryptic about how many SEATS ARE CURRENTLY FILLED by the time my butt's in their interview seat. get it? #RCscore25 😉

Your understanding of the process is clearly flawed.

They're not going to tell you that information because they don't have it. They have a certain number of students already deposited, they have a number of outstanding offers out and they can't say "oh, we still have X openings" if the number of outstanding offers is more than the number of seats they have left. It is a fluid process that is constantly changing as depositees change their minds and students with offers accept or decline. By the time those offers are taken or expire, the next board has already met and more offers are out. Hell, until the entire class matriculates they won't have firm numbers.
