hey guys,

thanks for all the welcoming posts and open arms...greatly appreciated. glad to see agent is back in action too.

biodude, don't worry about being a pain-in-the-ass to your premed advisor....i was actually thinking about how i needed to know my advisor better because some of these schools require a letter from him. just planned a meeting with him wed🙂 it will all pay off when he/she writes you an incredible rec.

washkeep.....very impressive that you go to wash u. in st. louis...im sure you are fimiliar with the fact that their med school has the highest admissions rating in the country...higher than harvard!! anyhow, because i doubt getting a 37 on the mcat, i am sorry to say i didn't apply there. i applied to 17 M.D. schools and actually a few D.O. schools. I'm from FL, so all the FL schools plus the ones up the east coast (george wash, georgetown, wake forest, tufts, boston u., new york, temple, tulane, etc.) ohhh, i can't forget USC in Cali....a bit unrealistic, but i'm thinking it could be a great trip if i got lucky enough for an interview. i'm hoping to get about 7-8 interviews and admitted to 4-5 schools....of course 1 is the magic number, so i would be fine with that.

i actually already received a secondary application for a D.O. school today in philly, but the AMCAS is much slower, so M.D. schools should take quite a bit longer. i'll keep ya posted.

tina, congrats on the research job...im actually looking for one in the fall.

well hope everyone's week goes well, i am off to procrastinate some more before i study for the MCATS (taking them in aug).

Roll Call:

Bakersfield College (finally transfer out next fall!)
Age:17
Class: sophomore

MEdicated- sounds like the admission process is going well for you;congrats on the secondary!

Biodude I'll be part of the 2006/2010 class as well; we will probably see each other on the interview trail since we a re both from Cali.

BUMP!

Hey guys. Just taking a break from work and thought I'd give this thread a bump. It always deserves to be on the first page. 😀

Much thanks to Biodude for cheering me up yesterday. What makes us different than other people should be that we never give up! Sure, we shed a few tears once in a great while, but we keep on keeping on.

What are you guys doing fun for summer?

That was a nice statement Ballerina.

I'll be applying to NW and trying to get all my credits to transfer over.

Thanks for the compliment MEDicated! So many people haven't even heard of my school... I'm just excited someone recognized the name. People will ask me if I'm going to go to the med school here... lol... they take almost no Wash U grads.

I was wondering about Georgetown and George Washington... I thought they were both kinda pretentious. And what's Tufts like? I guess I'm curious how you decided on them. I'm looking into PBL and systems teaching. And then there's rankings and all that crap. But I think it would be great to be by a big metropolitan center. Are you a southerner? B/c I used to live in the south and now i'm "up north." And boy, it's a different culture. Not like you can't handle it, but I know some souther-raised kids who arent very happy far from home.

But good luck! It's sounds like you're well on your way.

2 days till Summefest!

Hey all🙂

Just thought I'd check in. Not much interesting going on in my life at the moment lol. My bf and I are still trying to figure out what exactly we're going to do over his vacation week. Amazingly enough hotels are actually way cheaper in Denver over that week compared to Colo Spgs lol.

Biodude - I'm a hopeful 2006/2010 class member.

MEDicated - congrats on getting your first secondary already! I know it doesn't mean anything, but it's cool how fast they responded.

Tina - Glad to hear you're feeling better about things today. As far as fun this summer....well other than this little one-day getaway my bf and I are planning probably not much. Between classes and my planning to start volunteering in July and a sucky bus system in the evening there isn't a whole lotta time for fun stuff lol. I think one Fri or Sat I'll head up to our little zoo and wander around, and we have a really cool outdoor arcade with games ranging from old nickel pinball to the latest arcade games to Skeeball that we like to go to during the summer though. I'm still trying to decide if I'm gonna try and move to a cheaper place or in with a roommate so I've slowly been working on cleaning out stuff too. You accumulate a lot of junk when you live in the same place for 5+ years hehe.

Well back to studying "Hormones and the Brain" for biopsych 🙂

Hey all, I'm doing some last minute studying for my World History third exam (the test is in one hour). I'm going to also go schedule an appointment with my pre-med advisor after this has been posted up. I don't know how well he counsels people who already have schedules set and already knows what to do. For me, it's not so much knowing what to do as it is actually going about and doing it 😛

BallerinaTina16 - I'm glad that I could have been of help. Be sure to come on back to the club if you need more encouragement from everyone 🙂 and I agree...someone else said this on the SDN boards a long time ago regarding motivation for medicine..."the question is not IF but WHEN." I mean I will just apply again if the class of 2010 cycle doesn't work out for me.

Hmm, fun over the summer. Not much. This is probably going to be my most not fun summer for a while (at least 'til I'm applying for med schools anyhow). Let's see here, my schedule is: wake, exercise, study, surf the 'net, study, play some games, study, eat, study, read an interesting novel, study, go out and volunteer, go to school, come home, sleep and repeat. Did I mention that I'm studying? 😀

Skaterbabe74 - So how's Biopsych treatin' ya? As for Comp Religions, would this week be the last week of classes for it? Hopefully you and your boyfriend will figure something out. Have fun! 😀

Washkeep - Hey dude, I hear that Washington U's med school has pretty rough admission statistics...GPA like 3.82, MCAT 12 - 13 - 13, yikes. That's quite high. Anyway, as for the other schools you've mentioned, here's what I have to say about Tufts: I'm not exactly inclined to go there after running into this little book - http://upalumni.org/medschool/

I don't agree with most of the author's viewpoints (I don't think that doctors get paid too much plus I think that lawsuit lawyers are much worse than he makes physicians in general out to be) but his documentation of medical school has made me reconsider Tufts.

agent - hey dude, I hope that it all goes well for ya!

Valinor - hmm, looks like we may. We may also see Roselee since I see that she's also from CA and applying for our year.

MEDicated - well, thanks for the reassurance. Yikes, a secondary already from PCOM? Hmm, well that's pretty darn cool considering that you haven't taken your MCAT yet. It'll sure be good practice for the later secondaries you get. Please keep us posted on your situation as it advances. We're all so very interested in seeing documentation on the application cycle (not like the other application cycle posts I've seen on this board anyhow). I'll say good luck to ya on your MCAT and rugirlie as well.

I'm still counting the days before my current crop of summer courses is over. I have about 5 more class sessions (not including tonight but including the day of the final) of American Studies. I have 5 more class sessions of World History and then the final exam (once again not including today). So then, next week will be my last week of World History lecture and then I'll have an entire week to study for the final in that course, while I still have next week and the week after for American Studies. So close, yet so far away...man it is funny how quickly my summer session classes are going by.

Next month I'll be registering for Fall session classes. Washkeep, it seems that you were right way back when you first starting posting in this thread. Looks like the school beat me. I'm still considered a freshman since I only completed 29 semester units (though for some reason they count my community college course for credit but not for the amount of units I got from it - it's actually "officially" 26 units)...however, by the time the Fall semester starts, I will be considered a sophomore since I will have completed 38 semester units. If I have to resort to plan B when signing up for classes, at least I'll have about 50 units completed by the time I have to register for Spring session classes...that'll sure be more than a lot of the other sophomores in the school by then.

Darn it, I'm hoping that classes don't fill up too quickly though it seems like a lost cause from my perspective: Seniors are allowed to begin registering on July 10, and Freshmen are allowed to begin registering on July 24 while Juniors and Sophomores start registration in between these two extremes...and for some lame reason the school still thinks I'm a freshman. Plus, I refuse to sign up for the male Cell Bio professor's classes so I've also got that working against me (if the female Cell Bio prof's classes and labs are all filled up by the time I register, it looks like I'll have to skip Cell Bio yet again). At least this time I've set up back-up schedules just in case my intended schedule's classes are all filled up.

Well, that's all for today...darn, now I wonder how difficult today's test is gonna be? Oh well, better go on back to studying 🙄

I love washkeeps sig..

hey ppl
just wanted to share that i'm in the middle of my finals week and just found out a few hours ago that my bio final got cancelled, woohoo (tho b/c the teacher has a sort of emergency, not a good one, so i'm not that happy, but still)
that means that i'm done with all the hard ones (physics🙁 ) and can almost start chilling:clap:
summer session starts monday no break😡

also, for those of you who haven't read it, i just picked up a copy of "The House of God" by Samuel Shem from my local library, the book is awesome 👍 👍 read it when u have time

Holy scheiss Biodude! I just read a couple of lines from that website and this guy sounds super bitter and unhappy about Tufts. I'm afraid to go beyond the preface... but i'm a little sadistic... being premed... so i will. Sorry to hear the school's taking it to you. You are putting up a good fight. And I do really think it's a fight, but i'm not exactly sure against what.

Alcohol person- why are you still in school? What's wrong with your school? Even the calendar says it's officially summer?

Ballerina- Forgot to say CONGRATULATIONS!!! 😀

Thanks agent.

Hi everyone!
Nothing amazing happen to me at the moment just chilling and surf the net. But i am starting Summer school tomorrow.

Firstly I wish rugirlie and MEDicated lots of luck for the MCAT. 🙂.MEDicated i'm happy you already got secondaries and have even done the exam, thats superbe.

Biodude- definitevely that person seems very very angry and unorientatedand only read the preface and 2 paragraph of pediatrics. I 'll probably be 2006/2010 😱
BallerinaTina16- i went to athens a while a go so x 4 days and aprt from that not doing anything extra fun . i'llgo out in town, movies, surf the net in my free time after summer school.,help my mom in the house 😛

Hey all -

I went to bed extremely early for me last nite lol like 8pm and other than waking up a couple times slept straight thru til my alarm went off at 7am. Today's gonna be strictly a study day for me other than heading to my last (thank goodness) comparative religions class late this afternoon. Biopsych is going fine, gonna go in and take a few more tests tomorrow morning, and then put it away until after the 30th so I can get my final for comparative religions written. I hope to get thru chapters 3, 4, and 5 tomorrow, and possibly try my hand at 6 depending on time. Hopefully I won't have to take every exam the 3 times allowed just to get 90s lol.

Wow CH3 - I assume you're on a quarter system, but you're still at one of the latest spring semester schedules I've ever seen! Congrats on not having to worry about Bio, and good luck on your remaining finals! What are you taking over the summer? Coincidentally I just received my copy of "House of God" along with "Intern Blues" in the mail the day before yesterday. (I had a gift certificate for amazon.com.) I can't wait to read them, but I have 2.25 books left to read from the library first lol.

Biodude - Hope your western civ exam went well. We'll all keep our fingers crossed that there's still a place for ya in the female prof's cell bio 😀 .

We only have one section of cell bio each fall and it's got 45 people on the waitlist as of yesterday lol. Due to budget cuts they couldn't add in another section so as a result they've reverted back to offering cell bio in both spring and fall (they had stopped offering it at both times and genetics at both times to prevent students from going "out of sequence" too much because it's assumed we'll take cell bio first, then genetics, and then anything else we need like immuno, molecular bio, etc). Now they are going to "let" us take cell bio in either fall or spring, genetics in the spring, and allow us to take genetics without having had cell bio first.

If you don't make it into cell bio (and I still have faith that you will) what have you decided to try and take as back ups?

Have a good day everyone!

No you're not! 🙂 . I know I have to make up for the courses I missed this summer but I am working part-time so I guess it all evens out. Still gotta eat, you know? 😀 I do however plan to check and see if there are any spots left for the second summer session. If there are then I'll sign up. If not oh well. I will just try not to worry about it. Besides after speaking with an advisor I found that I could actually CLEP out of up to two classes (humanities courses). So I will probably do that over the winter break.
How's the house hunting, agent?
Oh and Biodude I'm applying for the 2006/2010 class too! 🙂

Hey all, daily update coming through...

agent - hey dude, you couldn't possibly be the only person not taking summer courses. Besides, ain't that a good thing? At least you'll have more free time to spend with your wife and kids, won't you? I myself will not really have much free time over the summer anyhow. Oh yeah, and washkeep's sig is cool too 😀

washkeep - Hey dude, watch out for the rest of the book, will ya? The author goes on later about his delusions (like dreaming of killing people) and it starts to become really disturbing. I myself could not finish reading it because it became a very disjointed mess...but it's also opened up my eyes to some of the bad parts of medical training.

minx - same to you about what I had said regarding the book. The guy sounds really bitter because his viewpoints didn't mesh well with the medical profession. Oh, yeah, and have fun in summer school 😀

Skaterbabe74 - Well, that's funny, my school requires Cell Bio before Genetics as well! But there are about 10 Cell Bio sections...that should fit around 240 people altogether, though there are around 255 people competing for those spots, so at least 15 people won't get into any Cell Bio course. If you're interested in my plans of schedule, here it is (note Plan B and Plan C are inter-changable depending on which classes are and are not filled up):

Plan A (the primary plan):

Cell Biology
General Chemistry II
Calculus

Plan B:

One of the above science courses
Calculus
Introduction to Logic (I heard Logic classes are good preps for the MCAT on the MCAT SDN boards)
Greek Philosophy (well, if I don't get the classes I want, I might as well start on my minor)

Plan C:

Both science courses
Intro to Logic
Greek Philosophy

Plan D:

Intro to Logic
Greek Philosophy
"add" into the courses (i.e. waitlist)

I am really hoping that I don't have to resort to Plan D...that would not be good if I had to do that. Plus the school should be realizing that I will be finished with all of my gen ed courses except one (and I'm not allowed to take that course until I am at least a Junior-level student)...I can not take Organic Chem without G. Chem II, I can not advance in my major classes if I can't take Cell Bio, and I can not take Physics until I have taken Calculus. So if all 3 of those crucial courses are filled up, I will have no recourse but to add and try to explain to the school administration about why I NEED those THREE SPECIFIC courses 😡

I'm sure that the Cell Bio professor would let me in if I'm annoyingly persistent...i.e. come to class and labs every single day that they're scheduled, dropping by the prof's office hours, etc.

CH3CH2OH - dude, you're still in finals week? That's insane! I mean it's already summer and even high school students were finished about a week before now. The quarter system definitely blows. And by the way, I know how you feel about having to do summer courses like that. I took my last final on a Friday and summer school started on the very next Monday for me too (well, technically it did, except that my classes both started on Tuesday so I had a 3 day rest instead of a 2 day one). It's not fun, but I'm sure you'll adapt to it.

Hmm...

Cool 😎

Now as for my summer courses, here's what happened yesterday: I got my second exam back from World History...no surprise, 4 questions missed just as I suspected. I also took the third exam and heard the answers to it right afterward. I got everything right on that one. So that means that if I want to get an A in the class I can not miss more than 6 questions on the 25 question final! I'm more worried about American Studies though. I got my exam back from that class and it's a B. But that's not what I'm worried about. The type of answers that the professor was expecting on his all-essay exam totally blew me away...at least I know what to be expecting this time around for the Final. I might end up with a B in American Studies. Oh well.

Just to give another idea on how fast summer school is going, my next test for both classes would be my finals for each class. So that means that what I'm learning now will be on the final. I can't say that I'm looking forward to the next set of two summer classes though: Psychology of Personality and World History (World Civilizations after the 16th century). Oh well, one thing to look forward to after I am done with these classes is that I will be finished with every one of my general ed classes  Well, except for the one where I have to wait until I am a Junior to take anyway.

I'll be doing...stuff...

Oh my god, I'm not going to Tufts. :scared:

in the summer i'm taking programming, speech, and PE. 6 week summer session, and only two weaks of break before school starts again-since i'm transferring from quarter to semester system.

now i'm finishing up the last chapter for my humanities final, which starts in two hours🙁

Got my second chem test tonight at 6. Hopefully won't be too bad, as its only on solids, molarity, molality, wt %, henry's law, and a couple other things.

I reworked my schedule for the Fall. Currently I am now in Bio 202(evolution and ecology type stuff), Orgo 1, Physics 1, and Statistics. I'm seeing if I can get A&P in instead of Statistics without taking an 8am class. Hopefully I can 🙂

What's the problem with Tufts for you now, dude? Oh, and I think everyone also might want to check out this website:

http://www.erbook.net

The dude who runs it is quite intelligent and he has a thing or two to say about the specialty of emergency medicine, and not all of it is good...so ER-inclined pre-meds may want to check it out. Especially for some of the more noxious aspects that TV shows like ER don't show (like paperwork, laws, lawsuits, impatient patients, etc.). Oh yes, and he also reviews books. Not surprisingly, Dr. Greger (the cynical author of the Med student diary link I gave before) gets low rankings in that section.

Oh, and really, every profession has its pros and its cons. Dr. Greger obviously thought that the cons outweighed the pros in medicine so he totally bashed it. Heck, I was just as mad when I found out what lengths some lawsuit lawyers go to grab their big fat cash settlements +pissed+ It doesn't just hurt the plaintiffs in those cases, it hurts society as a whole by increasing our taxes and costs for things. I tell all of my friends who are thinking about becoming lawyers to stay the heck away from doing malpractice law or any type of law that requires someone to sue somebody else for big wads of cash 😛

Don't believe me? Check out:

http://www.overlawyered.com

Whoops, sorry for going off-topic there...but I don't really have a high opinion of lawyers. Sorry to all the people out there who have family members who are lawyers.

Whew. That's two days of working over 10 hours and I am glad it is over. I haven't had a lot of time to read over everyone's post and answer personally, but I will! I did want to mention that I do plan on applying for class of 2006/2010 as I want to take a year off between. Okay, time to crash. Will post more soon, promise!

Hey Guys-

I would like to hear your opinions on what classes and how many hours to take first and second semester of your freshman year.

Thanks!

Me too.

I'm totally non-trad so I wouldn't know, but I suppose I could offer a few suggestions based on my experiences.

biodude, that disillusioned doc was from tufts. And Tufts sounds like it could also be referring to Dr. Seuss characters.

Hey all!

Centrum - well, I just completed my freshman year, and here is what I recommend, based on my experiences (I am assuming that this is your very first time going to college, right?):

- Your first semester may be pretty difficult as you will be adjusting to college. I would suggest around 12 unit hours. Why 12? Well, you will be considered a "full-time" student if you need financial aid, plus it will not be overloading your schedule, giving you more time to study for classes.

- Your second semester should be easier than your first as you should have adjusted to college by now and you know what works for you and what doesn't. My advice for second semester is take the amount of semester hours that you feel comfortable with...for example, if you think that you can handle 20 unit hours after first semester, go ahead! On the other hand, if you feel that you need to slow down, then you should take less.

- First semester classes: Well, I went right on the ball and started taking those science classes...but most people recommend not taking major- or science-related classes your first semester at college. And for good reason too. Science classes are significantly harder than regular classes. I know, because I almost ended up with a D in my first semester Biology class. My advice is, don't take science classes until you have gotten used to how colleges and universities work. I abused my freedom (parties, skipping classes where the profs didn't take attendence, etc.) and nearly screwed up.

On the other hand, if you think that you can handle the science classes your first semester (you will need to study A LOT MORE for those than your other classes if you want a good grade):

1st semester General Biology (or what is considered "General Bio" for "Bio majors" - my "General Bio" was actually an "Evolution and Biodiversity" class)

1st semester General Chemistry (if you did well in high school Chemistry, this is a piece of cake, assuming that you study here)

1st semester Calculus (well I wanted to finish all my math freshman year 😛 )

I would say choose one from this list, and then choose the other one your second semester. General Chem was easier for me than Bio was (and I hate Chem and love Bio! 😕)

- Second semester classes: If you have adjusted to college, I would say go right ahead and throw in some science/math courses. If not, well, wait until the next year. Really, the second semester depends on how well you do the first semester. If you still need time to adjust, don't overload yourself and don't take any hard classes until you do. Don't act like me and end up with a 2.81 GPA at the end of your first year of college. Learn from my mistakes.

I hope this has helped you, dude. Talk to your pre-med advisor too. Maybe he/she can help you, or maybe not. Some pre-med advisors (like mine) are awesome and knowledgeable, and some just think of what kind of numbers you need for med school. And welcome to the club. Please feel free to drop back in and let us know how you're doin' okay?

washkeep - Did you finish reading the book? Also, please note that he's not unique. His experiences are probably the worst I have seen, but there are many bad experiences in the third year of medical school. Just go to the "Clinical Rotations" forum on SDN and check out the thread "Anyone had enough?" Those are SDN people in different med schools who are goin' through the same BS that Dr. Michael Greger went through, but his experiences certainly seem a lot worse than most peoples'.

There have also been books written about how med school just blows...for example, there is Becoming a Doctor: A Journey of Initiation in Medical School by Melvin Konner, M.D., PhD (a very intelligent person I might add, though his arrogance shows). He got his PhD before applying to med school and he's non-traditional (I think he was like 35 when he applied).

I'm not trying to keep everyone here from applying, but what I am trying to do is let you all know that there are some down-sides to medical school, so that you will be aware when you apply. I know I am. Sure, medical school sounds like H-E-double hockey sticks, but if that's what I will have to do to do what I want to do for a living, then that's what I'll do! 🙂

BallerinaTina16 - Cool! That means that you, Valinor, Roselee, and me will probably be seeing eachother when we apply and interview as we're all in CA at the moment 😀

I'll be back later on in the day, as I see that this post has taken up a lot of space.

Hi all!

Well, five more weeks until I get that coveted BA in Psych. And, only about 10 more papers (3-5 pagers) to write before I get there. *sigh* I cannot begin to tell you how much I am looking forward to my science courses this fall!!! 🙂 If I never write another 15 page paper, it will be too soon!

Glad everyone's summer courses are going well. I'm taking the week off work next week to concentrate 100% on those papers. It will be so nice to just concentrate on school for once.

I'm excited about all of us on the Fall 2005- Spring 2006 (entry Fall 2006) interview circuit!! It will be so cool to see each other at interview (since we can say we knew each other when.... !!)😀

Nothing much else to report! I've been keeping up on the posts, so even though I don't post myself much, I'm out here!! 🙂

Roselee

Roselee- Hey cool, hope ya get your degree! As for science courses, you might have to write some research papers (such as lab reports) 😀 I think term papers are probably the main reason why I'm not very fond of General Education courses.

Now onto me:

Hey everyone, nothing new to report...though I've got quite a bit of stuff I have to sift through in my house. I think that I may be cleaning up over the weekend with how much junk I've got lying around. Still have not heard from HOAG yet, but I've got until at least the second or third week of July, so I may be "waitlisted". I feel like I'm already applying to med school here 😛

Hey all 🙂

Well looks my weekend will be completely comparative religions. Our final is officially 14 1-2 pg essays in response to discussion questions in the book. He gave us choices anyway for each of the 2 questions/chapter so it's not too bad. Just trying to figure out whether he wants them in 1 paragraph, 3 paragraph, or 5 paragraph format lol.

Nice to hear from ya Roselee! I still can't believe how many papers you had to write to finish up your degree...as far as never writing another 15 pg paper you very well may have to for at least one of your science classes lol. Especially if you do any research classes or for some lab classes, but it would only be one/ semester at most lol.

Tina - I hate long days like that. Feels like that's all I ever worked when I was selling shoes lol.

Keep the faith Biodude. I'm sure you'll make it into HOAG this time around!

Okay back to finishing up my last chapters in comparative religions so I can start writing these darn things lol. Later everyone!

--Jessica, UCCS

Yes, you've all burst my bubble. I will probably have to write science reports! I'm sure though once I'm done with these classes and don't have to write as much, I'll be able to enjoy writing again!

I have to do all of the papers because I attend Washington State university Distance Degree Program, so papers and a final (taken with a proctor) are the means of grading. That means 10-15 page papers for each lesson! (ave 6-8 lessons a class). I've loved the flexibility of the program, but I honestly am looking forward to sitting in classes again with a professor lecturing. 🙂 Self-study from a textbook can be trying at times 🙂!

Have a great evening everyone!

Roselee

Actually I am the future dentist. I have been asked by a friend about what classes to take when planning his freshman undergrad courses and was looking for a few other opinions. Thanks for the help Biodude.

Take care.

Hey Centrum - Thanks for the added info about why you were looking for info. I think many of us were wondering. Anyway, your friend is probably best off going to his/her school's advising center since they usually have a laid out "plan" for most majors. I'm a nontrad as well but for my .02 cents I agree with Biodude to not overload your first semester. I wouldn't take more than 15-16 credit hours (or 4-5 classes). In my case since I had most of my GE's out of the way before coming into my current university I took A&P, Gen Chem I, spanish II, and calculus. Most frosh years in biology majors are spent getting Gen Bio, Gen Chem, math, and english, and possibly a couple other GE's out of the way like history or psychology, etc. I wish your friend luck!

Roselee - Now I understand lol. I still couldn't imagine writing that many papers lol. I've taken several online/distance classes, but never had to do that much writing. Would your papers be primarily summary papers about what you read in the book then?

--Jessica, UCCS

Skaterbabe,

Yes, for my lit class, it's mainly summaries. (those are the 3 page ones) But my history course is all thought pieces...blech. (not really blech...but I'm just so burned out!!!)

forgot to mention- agent i'm NOT taking summer classes. I have lots of money to make, so I can go back.

I was thinking... which med schools have the happiest students? Where do medstudents enjoy the best quality-of-life? What do ya'll think?

RoseLee- good luck!

And biodude, i think i'm class 2005/2009. But if i get a fullbright, 2006/2010.

hey all,

sorry it's been awhile since i was last on here and i havent gotten a chance to read all the old posts.

biodude, i saw you mentioned that you were waiting to hear from HOAG....what exactly is that?? fill me in if you get the chance and best of luck. i also noticed you say something about tufts in one of your old posts.....if you know something good/bad about the school i'd love the info.

washkeep, i applied to most of the medical schools based on location and them being private when looking out of state. it's virtually a waste of time and money to apply to a public out-of-state school....i know at Univ. of Florida for example, they accept ONE out of state applicant from 1000. i think ill make a great doc, but im not that good🙂 i did my undergraduate in VA so i've been away from home and im not worried about the big city life..i kinda look forward to it. big cities will also give you the opportunity to have incredible rotations and see some crazy things that don't happen too often.

it's funny you mentioned that thing about quality of life in medical school. that is something i will definitely be looking at on my interviews. it's more important to be happy in a medical school than to graduate from a presitigious one, so i'll keep you updated on my journey. as an aside, i know that Univ. of FL med school is very "student friendly"......i live here now and have friends in the class....they pretty much cater to your every need and the med students go out like 2 times a week....it's great! i hope to end up there.

I only know about chicago schools. In this areas students seem to be happiest at Loyola, but there's so many good schools here that it doesnt seem to make that much of a difference.

Hey everyone! I am currently bushwacked after yesterday's night classes and today's traveling (I went to the mall, got a haircut, and rented some movies to watch). So, first I will start with responses...

Centrum - oh, that explains it! 😀 I do hope that I've helped out some.

MEDicated - I left a link on Tufts a while back. Here it is again:

http://upalumni.org/medschool/

The author of this cynical "diary" is Dr. Michael Greger, MD. He seems to make his experiences during the third year of medical school more horrible than I think that they actually are. But the real kicker, though, is that he went to Tufts medical school. I'm also not impressed with Tufts after reading some comments on SDN from people who were accepted to that school or who are currently attending it. It seems that they take a lot of people from their waitlists, so if you're waitlisted there, there's a good chance you may get in.

One final note on the author of the book - he's not normal for a medical student. There are many other docs who went through worse and still haven't suffered the experiences that Dr. Greger suffered (well not that extreme level of hate anyhow).

HOAG Memorial Hospital located very close to the beach. It's also got a program for people who want to snag clinical experience (hospital volunteering). Very hands-on, and volunteers can go into the ER, OR, ICU, Obstetrics, etc. departments. They can at least witness procedures if not participate in them. They can also talk to physicians and well, find out what it is truly like to be a doctor! It's pretty sweet, but what I really wanted to do was obtain a paid hospital job like ward clerk, nurse assistant, scrub tech, etc. All of my attempts to gain clinical experience have failed up to this point, and I will not accept a no this time 😉

washkeep - hey dude, how's it goin' for ya? As for schools with happiest students...I can't help. Hopefully other people can. But I would think that schools with pass/fail systems instead of A/B/C/D/F systems for obvious reasons 😀

Roselee - sorry to make a downer for you. But look on the bright side...you don't have to write as many pages for your lab reports. My Chemistry lab reports required one page of a narrative (intro to the experiment, procedures done, and conclusions) and several pages of calculations (MICROSOFT EXCEL makes this much much easier than you may think!). The hard part was the narrative. As for biology reports, they also weren't so bad...just objectives of the experiment, the experiment itself, and conclusions. That's it! 😀

I think Skaterbabe covered everything else pretty well...🙂

agent - Hey dude, how much info do ya have on Chicago schools? Those are a huge consideration for me if I don't get accepted to any California schools, since my mom has tons of friends in Chicago who would help me out if I get bored 🙂 There's also an Anesthesiologist living in Chicago right now who's a close friend of my mom's. He's an attending so it might be cool to schedule an Anes rotation in medical school with 'im 😉

Skaterbabe74 - Thank you for the encouragement but I've yet to receive a response. I'll start gettin' worried if I don't get one by July 6th. Anyway, hope you finish up those darn essays soon!

Me - Finals for both classes coming up in two weeks (July 10). My birthday is also coming up in the coming week if anybody cares...I already left hints before. Hmm...becoming 19...darn, that's still two years away from being a "full" adult 😀 I've got quite an amount of material to study for my finals...so later everyone!!

Hi everyone.

Glad to meet all you under-M1s and I just tried to read as much of this thread as I can and feel like I know u guys already.

About me.....I'm from Southern California and will also be applying for the entering class of 2006 so I'll be doing my app process in 2005. I'm a Psychology major and minoring in Spanish and Bio. I'm through with my one yr of Gen Chem and Bio and will be taking Orgo and Physics this coming fall (along with other classes). I'm planning on taking my MCATs in August 2004 and of course, my application in June of 2005.

So here's the compiled list of people planning to apply for entering class of 2006, graduating class of 2010:

Hey all - Just a quick stop. Still working on finishing my comparative religions final. Looks like I'm gonna end up cramming a lot of biopsych in after the 4th cuz I have a feeling I won't get much sleep tonite. I'm just under halfway done with writing my final, but I'm going to have to type it all in at school tomorrow because my ink ran out on my home printer 🙁

Welcome granola! Sounds like a lot of us are planning organic and physics for this year -- we'll be able to rant and rave together!😀 I'm starting to feel left out of the cali scene lol. Sounds like a bunch of you will get to meet up on the interview trail🙂 . Actually, I know I'll apply to UCSF but other than that I don't know yet. And other than having an advantage of being nontrad for ucsf I know how hard it is for out of staters to get interviews at cali schools. Too bad cuz I think I'd love cali hehe.

Back to writing!

Biodude - I only know what Ive heard since I havent been to any of them.

My aunt and cousin went to loyola for undergrad, not the same school but.. Also Loyola has new facilities which are really nice.

I'll be going to NW hopefully. I think they have something that if you go there and are pre-med you dont have to take the mcat???

Yes!!! I am applying for the 2006/2010 class. Soooo you can take away the "??s" now. Besides it's a psychological encouragement to see my name up there with all these good people!! 😀 😉

I'm on track for 2005/2009.

Guys working at a restaurant can be great sometimes. A really nice young woman told me I'd be a great pediatrician... "I can just tell." I can't remember the exact phrasing, but she told me she could see a kid being happy waking up to me over his bed. Maybe pediatric surgeon?

Guys be wary of the orgo/physics combo. Orgo is a TON of work. And if you're doing calc-based physics... so is that. It's really a time issue. It's NOT the same time commitment as general chem or general bio or calculus.

Do you think med students are happier with PBL and systems learning? I think the different grading systems probably help biodude. The people at Med College of Wisconsin seem surprisingly happy. Even the kids from California! Have ya'll been to
http://www.amsa.org/resource/cardev/medresults.cfm
😛

Woohoo! I am done!!  14-16 pages my a#$! My comparative religions final turned out to be just over 20 pages, and most of my essays were just barely a page long! lol...

Anyway thank god that's over with. Remind me never to take 3.5 week classes again lol. At least not with boring profs who don't teach you crap lol. Onto biopsych😀 I only wish I knew how long it would take him to get grades posted lol.

Agent - If NW really does that I will be in awe and shock lol. They may not care what you get on the MCAT assuming you have good ugrad grades, but I'll be really surprised if they don't make you take it at all. If they do, way cool 😎

Keep in mind Wash that you're talking about Wash U's organic and physics lol. I imagine you had it a lot tougher than many of us will. Fingers crossed anyway. But I'm also not taking calc-based physics and got an easy A in non calc-based physics in hs so I'm hoping some of it will come back to me lol. I also don't have a choice in taking organic and physics together tho. I want to take some biochem before the MCAT and definitely don't want to take organic and biochem together hence my doing organic this year. And I wouldn't want to physics with biochem and analytical chem either. Too many problems hehe.

To answer your question yeah I do think in general students are pretty happy with PBL/systems based systems because there's so much less competition, team work is a good thing, and things get reinforced over and over as you go through different cases. On the other hand, I think PBL/systems is really tough on some students that aren't used to that kind of learning process. It's harder to know what to study that way. As far as competition tho I think pass/fail or even honors/pass/fail systems make for happier students too. It's the A-F systems, and highest honors/honors/ pass/marginal pass/fail systems that make classmates cutthroat and stressed.

I hadn't checked out that link until now. It's awesome. I think I'll have some fun reading through all the surveys lol. Too bad you can only pick 3 schools at a time though.

Hope everyone has a good week!

--Jessica, UCCS

skaterbabe -- congrats on finishing your comparative religion final. It was a take-home test? The only good thing about 3.5-week classes....it's over by the time you think about it.

washkeep -- thanks for the warning about physics/orgo combo. I met with my premed advisor this morning and he saw that I was taking both classes along with 2 other classes. He asked if I was sure about taking a total of 4 classes this fall. I think the other two classes will be easy since one is spanish-I (and I took 2 yrs of spanish in HS so it will be a review) and the other is a 2-unit sociology class (so I don't think it will be too much work).

By the way, for those of you that have taken orgo, did you use a molecular model and did you find it helpful?

I'm going to Yosemite Wednesday night and coming back Sunday night. I'll be climbing El Capitan (yes, I'm a rock climber) so I'm really excited about that. Most people take days to get to the top but I'm not planning on sleeping while hanging off the side of the rock so I'll only climb during the day and come back down at sunset. I can't wait for this adventure!

since washkeep and 2badr confirmed, here's the list again for people planning to apply for 2006 entering class:

RoseLee
Valinor
agent
Skaterbabe74
minx
2badr
Biodude

(edited: took washkeep off list for 2006-2010, thx for catching that skaterbabe)

Actually Washkeep is applying the year before us granola. But he's still cool 😛 (not that the year we're applying makes a diff hehe).

Yeah it was a take home test since there really wasn't time built into the schedule for taking an in class midterm and final. He gave us most of the questions at the Fri before last, and then the remaining two chapters on the last day of class which was Wed. We just had to answer discussion questions out of our book and the answers were between 300-600 words but some of them were pretty hard to even come up with 300 words worth of info lol.

Sounds like you'll have a good mix in the fall. I'm stuck taking cell bio and biostats along with organic and physics, but I honestly don't think I'll have much trouble with the bio classes after seeing the syllabi for the them. Be careful of spanish though. It can take a lot of time to fill out the workbook exercises lol. Spanish I shouldn't be too bad tho. I spent as much if not more time on Spanish II last fall then I did on A&P!

Yosemite and El Capitan sound like a blast! I don't think I'd want to sleep hanging off a rock either lol...especially one as sheer as El Capitan is. It's one thing if there's a big enough crack to curl up in I suppose but just dangling there? No way lol.

Hey people! I haven't been on for a while due to some things that came up. Anyway, I'm about as back on-track as I'll ever be for this week...

granola - hi and a belated welcome...so you live in Southern CA eh? Which county? Just a bit interested you know...😉 I myself live in famous Orange County...though in a somewhat lesser known part of it. As for applying for the entering class of 2006, hopefully you'll run into the rest of us CA dudes and dudettes 😀

Sounds like you'll be having more fun during this summer than I will be 😛 Anyway, please keep us updated on anything else exciting that you may be doing (well, it doesn't having to be exciting to us...)

Skaterbabe74 - Congrats on finishing up your Comparative Religions final  Geez, I hope that I don't end up in such an insane class next summer session. Are you enjoying Bio-psych?

washkeep - I think that I would also prefer a PBL (problem-based learning for those who don't know what it stands for) system over a lecture-based one. Truth be told, I usually don't pay much attention during lecture so I take massive amounts of notes 😀 Plus the teamwork skills that you can practice are extremely helpful for when you actually go to work, since the health care field requires tons of teamwork (surgeries require Anesthesiologists, Surgeons, Scrub techs, Surgical assistants, nurses; Docs seem to have to work with a lot of nurses, etc.) Oh yeah, and thanks for the heads-up on the Physics/Organic combo...even though I'll be taking a "watered-down" Physics (tougher than the 101 Physics class, but still easier than Physics for Physics and Chemistry majors...), it will still be Calculus-based (I assume that since it requires Calculus to be taken before the class). I was planning on snagging a Physics/Organic combo for Spring 2004 and maybe Fall 2005. I'll be re-considering that now based on the study time required for both classes (I was also planning on taking some Biology courses with-in this schedule...Genetics and Molecular Bio to be more precise 😀).

agent - hey dude, it's cool...I guess I'll just have to fly into Chicago to find out what it's like. I've never been there before.

2badr - Hmm...encouragement. Funny how most of us plan on applying for that year...I'm not even sure that I'll be ready (course-work and volunteer-wise) by that time. As for maturity-wise, I think that I'll be ready. It's just the darn administration system at my school...whoops, looks like I digressed here. Sorry 😳

So, it looks like I'm in the home stretch when it comes to my current cropping of classes. This entire week will be lecture, lecture, lecture, and more lecturing. Next Tuesday night will be the last lecture for American Studies, and the day before Independence Day will be my last lecture for History. Next time, I'll reconsider slabbing together courses that fall on my birthday 😛 It's no fun to have to spend one's birthday at 9:30 in the evening listening to a professor drone on about the subject. I hope that they'll at least have the courses I look for next summer during the second session instead of just the first!

I still haven't received word from HOAG Memorial Hospital yet...I'm starting to get a bit worried. Darn, it seems like fate doesn't want me getting any clinical experience at this time...maybe I'll be able to get some in the Spring of 2004...

In any case, I have a feeling that I may swing by the soup kitchen over the weekend. Then I'll be studying for my finals, both of which will be held next week on Thursday. Then on Monday the week after, I'll be starting over in two brand-new classes (okay, not brand-new, but they'll be new for me). This summer's going to go by fast. Hmmm...I wonder when the Fall ROP courses will allow for sign-ups? I believe that the Cali people here should know what I'm referring to...

Well that stinks that class sign-ups start next week and I have to wait for 2 whole weeks before I'm allowed to sign up. I'll march straight to the admissions office to complain if all of my plans crumble...

my tentatively scheduled Fall courses are:

Cell Biology - required in order to take Genetics & Molecular Biology

General Chemistry II - required in order to take Organic Chemistry

Calculus - required in order to take Physics

So you see, I NEED all 3 courses at some point. Otherwise, I'll be stuck in the same position I am at now and that will totally screw up my scheduling plans...if all goes well, then my planned Spring courses would be:

Genetics and Molecular Biology*
Organic Chemistry*
Physics I*
Advanced English Writing

Now I think you all will definitely see why I NEED those specific courses in the Fall schedule...

Anyway, I think I will be going for now.

Hi UM1ers-
Just some encouragement for the group via my personal experience (and some old-fashioned bragging)... I just completed Organic Chem I in a 5 week condensed version, while working full time at my job - and pulled a B+!!!!!!! I'm gonna learn what it feels like to breathe and bathe regularly again and NOT take the part II over the summer - I'll jump back into it in the fall. But Orgo is definitely doable with the right combination of motivation and dedication to the task. And at work, I devised a way for my department to save $2500 over a two week period, so they love me there! Things are going well!!!!
Keep your heads up guys, and best of luck!!!

dc

bigdan -- congrats on your B+ in that 5-wk orgo class! That's really amazing.

biodude -- I used to live in Ontario, but just moved to the high desert (for free rent). Most of my friends live in OC though. And I can probably help u out on getting that clinical experience. One of the doctors I work for is opening a practice in Aliso Viejo and I can talk to her about u shadowing and assisting in minor inpatient procedures. I'll PM u more info.......

later

bigdan - Hey dude! Where have you been? The last time you came here seemed like ages ago 😀 Anyway, that's cool that you managed to go through O-Chem with a B+ like that...you think you could help me out with summer O-Chem study skills next summer, since I may have to resort to that next summer. What with how badly cramped up the class schedules are plus my university has way too many students.

granola - Thanks dude, I'll hold ya to that offer. What's the physician's specialty? Also, I thought that with the new HIPPA regulations (I know about HIPPA because I had to go through that training in hospice...) isn't it now more difficult to shadow physicians, what with patients' privacy at stake? By the way, I'll try to catch you on AIM sometime (looked at your profile) 😀

Well, looks like this week is going to end more slowly than I thought. Yesterday was boring. Today will probably be boring as well. It stinks, but for World History, about 85% of the exams come from the lecture, so I have to be there in order to snag the greatest amount of info to study for the exams...

I guess there's nothing new to report...
