FA 2010 (page 366) states that the triad involves the MCL, ACL, and lateral meniscus.

However, other sources (moore's, goljan, high-yield) state the medial meniscus.

an updated errata for FA 2010 was released today by both teamfirstaid and DIT, and both have not mentioned this to be an error.

What are the arguments for the involvement of the lateral meniscus, if this is true?

There was a publication sometime recently where they did a review to find out what was most common in ACL injuries and it was like 55% of the time the lateral meniscus is injured in the triad and the other 45% it's medial meniscus. In the past it was thought to be medial meniscus most commonly before that article. Regardless both are commonly involved, if there's a question on it now they'll probably have to ask about one of the other 2 of the triad or some other association/related question.

there was a thread about this a few weeks ago--the consensus was that the lateral meniscus is more often injured in acute acl/mcl tears and that the medial meniscus is more often involved in chronic injuries.

as an aside, it puzzles me how they would ask this on the exam, since most everyone's anatomy course taught the unhappy triad as involving the mcl.

didn't they like italicize it on the new FA too? I'm thinking they did that b/c they wanted you to know they made the change on purpose, so I would go with the new FA in the highly unlikely situation in which you are asked that question. I looked this up too and went to the FA errata page and stuff, so you definitely aren't the only one intrigued by this haha

hi Ryu,the medial meniscus is the inside of the knee, and the lateral meniscus on the out side.🙄
here is meniscus tear symptoms

1、Swelling of the knee joint.
2、Moderate pain, especially pain heavily when swelling.
3、Have discordance on range of motion, the symptom is unable bend or straight the leg completely.
4、Weakness of the knee joint, the symptom is difficult in straighting out and lifting the knee.
5、There is “poping” sound when get injury, and there is “click” sound when unbend and bend the knee joint, which is the most common meniscus tear symptom.
