The mind boggles at the implications of this act’s passage.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if this whole thing unravels given the absence of any real fiscal planning.

VA psychologists on this board — any thoughts about this news? I did five years at the VA and would never dream of going back in this climate.

“President Donald Trump signed a landmark bill Wednesday to replace the troubled Veterans Choice Program and expand private health care options amid a fight between the White House and Congress over how to pay for it.

The bill, the VA Mission Act, would also expand caregivers assistance to the families of disabled veterans and order an inventory of the Department of Veterans Affairs' more than 1,100 facilities with a long-term view to trimming excess.”

I'm trying to be optimistic for a few reasons:
- My clinic is really busy, so I doubt they'd shut us down.
- Mental health seems to be generally acknowledged as something that the VA does well.
- There are some very vocal and powerful anti-privatization veterans groups

We'll see, though.

I can only imagine the even bigger uproar about veteran suicide if they cut mental health care, especially given the new CDC suicide data.
With all of the completely believable patriotism that seems to permeate certain places and with certain people....i’m sure this is in the best interest of Veterans!

I’m sure decisions will be based on hard data, peer reviewed studies, etc. i’m excited to read the part about addressing suicide prevention and how fire arms are a major contributing factor to lethality considerations. It’s been a rocky road, but I finally think this is a big step towards making America great again!

Is this the program that pays the spouses of veterans to stay home and care for them?

Great, let's spend even more money on programs that aren't grounded in evidence-based practices.

If I wasn't so distrustful of this administration, I'd actually feel a bit relieved by this because it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Mainly because they are putting more money into EDRP and offering tuition reimbursement to physicians who will work in the VA for a certain number of years. Perhaps it is a smokescreen for the more nefarious parts of this act, but it seems like they at least will keep the VA going if they are putting money into these programs.

Or, I just need a reason not to be worried I'll be losing my job.

Ha, that was good for a laugh.

I have a feeling that I am pretty well screwed in the long-term. I have been hearing about HBPC programs being pushed for more productivity (which it will never meet when compared to outpatient clinics) and possible reassignment for underperformers. It would be a very governmental thing to do to increase money to veteran caregivers and make cuts to the program that provides them care in their homes. Personally, I am planning my next possible move in the next 2-3 years. Splitting my time between HBPC and another clinic at two separate locations seems not worth it. We'll see what the future holds.
