The Value of Social Media for Medical Students

You know I always thought the exact opposite; that putting yourself online was totally immature and inferior to those who make a name for themselves in the real world. Some of the alumni at my highschool actually got accepted into OSU med, but when you go on their twitter, all of it is vines, memes, what have you - stuff that goes against that pre-med alter of "professional" like cussing and nudity and its just that all I have to do is type in X name and it doesn't take long for my to judge that person and know how I should treat that person. But I guess people must not care because I've told so many people about this and the responses are all like "wow its 2014 who cares" and stuff along that line. Really? What am I supposed to do put up a bunch of caduceuses on twitter and pics with patients/elders from volunteering? That is not the image I want to portray to strangers and anyone who decides to look me up or who finds me through a friend or mutual friend or follower or whatever. I need an image of where I am going since i'm basically advertising myself to medschools because they do look you up. If I see you posting up you doing your'e hobby i'm gonna judge you by what hobby your'e doing and I'm going to assume that that is a large part of your'e personality. If I see you posting things about politically confusing movements such as "free syria" and what not, I can gurantee that your'e gonna be judged as somewhat of an activist and anti this party or section. Yunno you are gonna be judged by whatever you post and it doesn't matter what anybody thinks or if anyone doesn't understand it or if someone misinterprets your message of it, you get labled anyway, and your new status or whatever gets tossed around your community whether you like it or not. Don't get me wrong if the majority of people that you know are your friends and no one stalks or stumbles on your page then you are probably good but lets face reality. Even I could damage someones entrance into medschool if I knew their online identity https://firstlook.org/theintercept/2014/02/24/jtrig-manipulation/ , and in the end, especially at top-- schools, something like that is bound to happen. But yunno we are all shaping our lives around helping others and treating people so we have to take our chances, theres nothing much else we can do. Just be nice to everyone.
