Hi guys. I kinda got a late start on the EC's that are typical of a strong applicant. I only started this year (I just ended Sophomore year). By next year, I imagine my application will look something like this:

3.72 GPA, 3.83 sGPA. 32 MCAT

[I totally made up an MCAT score. I have never taken a practice test, but I am CONFIDENT that I will score at least that. If I am not scoring that well on practice tests, I will push back my MCAT. Right now I have a 3.86 SGPA, and only 1 B in the prereqs. Please just assume that I score a 32.]

-1.5 years (2-3 hours a week) nonclinical volunteering.
-about 70 hours volunteering in a hospital (non clinical, though)
-50 hours volunteering with my college's Volunteer club.
-50 hours shadowing
-1 semester doing Ecology research, poster presentation at a research symposium.
-1 summer doing unrelated Ecology research, poster presentation at a research symposium.
-2 semesters doing biochemistry research.
-1 semester tutoring fellow classmates in Organic Chemistry II
-Pretty much no clinical experience?

What do you think my chances are at mid/low end MD schools? I live in MN, so I don't really have many instate options. I appreciate any insight! 😀

With that GPA, an MCAT score >30 should get you a seat somewhere, but you MUST get some clinical experience.

Again, get clinical experience. you seem to have enough hours at the hospital doing non clinical volunteering so tbh, there shouldn't really be an excuse not to get clinical volunteering under your belt-ask them to relocate you.

Shadowing more is also advised.

Well, I should mention that I haven't been volunteering at the hospital lately. I did ~ 6 month volunteer gig, but ended it due to a tough semester (classwise). I haven't volunteered at a hospital for about 9 months.

Does anyone think I ought to take a gap year to develop my EC's?

Also, thanks for the replies!

I think the issue is that it'd be much more convincing if you took some additional time off to beef up your ECs. But that's just what my opinion is.
