Anybody have any tips to pass on to research mentors (specifically PhD advisers w/ little familiarity with the residency process) with regard to writing LORs for residency?

I was advised to do a combined LOR from my advisor and MD/PhD director which would cover the research perspective with the idea that the director knows more on what residency programs are looking for.
