Hi everyone,

I hope that this isn't a dumb or nitpicky question. So, at least in my program it is customary to provide food for the faculty during a thesis proposal. Due to some unforeseen scheduling conflict, my thesis proposal has been moved to 11 AM, which I think most would consider to be part of the lunch hour. Should I still provide food? If so, what kind of food--namely, snacks or something more substantial?

Thanks!

I dont think one should be pressured (or expected) to provide anything except the thesis. Sure its nice, but you can not be marked down bc you dont. They are all big boys and girls, they can eat before or be hungry for an hour. Therefore, IMHO, the least of your cocerns should be what kind and how much of what to get...

In my program, the norm was to always bring food to these kinds of things. And then no one ever ate any of it, except maybe the main advisor. Then you'd bring it back to the lab after the defense and feed your labmates and RAs. So be sure to bring something you'd like to eat.

Seriously, I don't think you should worry too much about matching the menu with the time of day. A cheese and fruit tray or bagels and cream cheese are safe choices. Good coffee and/or bottled water might be appreciated. The best person to ask would be people from your program who has already done this, since they can tell you more about your department's norms.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I was thinking. I've also been told that providing food doesn't make a difference, but it's pretty much expected. And, yeah, it's definitely a small detail, but I tend to overanalyze things. 😉

I didn't bring food for my thesis or dissertation defense, but it was uncommon to bring food to these types of events in my program.

I may be wrong, but I think you are enrolled in a program in the midwest. If it is the one I'm thinking of, then it's where I completed my undergraduate degree. 🙂 When I defended my honors thesis, I ordered a small tray of sandwiches and sides from Bonzers. I don't think it was that expensive, but I worked there at the time, so they may have cut me a deal. Nothing fancy required, but you are right, food is expected!
