Hi SDN members:

This is going to be a long post? Well I gave my part II very recently and thought I should let you guys know about my experience. Well I gave my part I Paper based in July ( Got 92%) and then suddenly I had to give part II soon? Well this is my experience in as short as I could make it.

My Preparation Time:
I read for less than a month.. I know I was boarding a super fast train?.10 subjects and 1 month. First few days it was slow but then last 15 days it was 15 hours of non stop study?. + few days of solving papers. Phew!

Materials I read:
>Textbooks(once)- Schaffer (oral path), Class notes(radio), Grossman (endo)..Did not have time for others
>Dental decks 2001(twice)- all subjects
> National Board papers- F, G, H, I, J and K
> Websites seen for Opath and Radio (these were very helpful)- and I forward my thanks to you guys at SDN for sharing them.

How the exam was:
Man its draining for sure? Im glad I made a habit to sit continuously for 8 hours for the practice papers. It starts with a tutorial for 15 mins. This time is not included in your exam. The second day tutorial is important for how the cases will appear....so I suggest everyone to take it. The exam starts after you finish this tutorial or after 15 mins, whichever is earlier.
It?s best to mark the question and go on to the next. You can go back, but it?s a torture ? as its difficult to keep a track of the unanswered questions. Well keep 5 mins at the end to see what questions , you?ve left unanswered. Try and do 1 question a minute to finish in time.

Things to remember:
As everyone knows, the content of the exam cannot be disclosed?but just a few general things one should be thorough with before the exam. Please remember friends? this is only some things that caught my eye and I thought are Important. You still need to read everything in all subjects?.

>Dental Public Health- types of studies, formula for incidence and prevalence, Incidence of exposed and unexposed to particular disease, mean median mode, OSHA and EPA functions, Types of Health organizations- HMO, PPS etc. ( I will write the answers to these in my next posts)

>Anatomy of Spaces (pterygomandibular etc), a little about the nerves? trochlear, abducens, maxillary, mandibular etc. Cavernous sinus. The side affected with unilateral TMJ pathology (ankylosis and hyperplasia), hypoglossal nerve injury.

>Drugs- Morphine, lidocaine, Propoxyphene, Barbiturates, Diazepam, Choral Hydrate*, Hydroxyzine*, Epinephrine, Atropine, Propranolol, Succinycholine, ALL ANTIBIOTICS, corticosteroids and NSAIDs. These should be known very thoroughly, which drug should not be given in which condtion..and drug interactions. etc

>Perio Flaps, plaque and calculus maturation time (day wise), Microorganisms associated with each perio and ging disease. Probing depth / amount of recession measurement.

>Please read Candidiasis, Herpes Simplex and aphthous well!! Herpangina, Erythema Multiforme, White sponge nevus, Luekoplakia , lichen planus?. Characteristics and Tx of choice for each. AOT, CEOT, ameloblastoma, ameloblastic fibroma, OKC, dentigerous cyst, nasolabial cyst, mid palatine cyst, Spread of infection route, SLOB rule and BULL rule in Radiology, kVP and mA effects on xrays. Collimation, rules of shadow casting. Read these important syndromes:- peirre robin, gorlin goltz, merkelson-rosenthal, gardners, cleidocranial dysplasia , ectodermal dysplasia, Sturge weber, puetz jeghers.

>Elastomeric materials, gypsum products, lining and base materials. Immediate dentures, How to increase and decrease vertical dimension of Occlusion. Location of retention grooves in all types of cavities.

Guess that?s all I can remember of what I think is important. Read the case history and radiographs carefully. Practice a lot of the Opath pictures for easier identifying in exam. I will have my results in the next week (mostly) and will keep you guys posted.

Thanks SDN and good luck to all!!!

Hi,
Can anyone who took the part 2 tell me how useful were the decks & asdapapers was?..I mean is it sufficient to fetch a decent score Thanks in advance 🙂

Hi jcv and dental doc...

well I'll try and answer both your questions....
Firstly I got my scores yesterday... Was a little skeptical to post them. But I guess its not bad either...

I got 86%

About the DPH ..I will write down some stuff what the terms mean..and a little explaination..as im aware of them through my MPH degree. Its just that I need adequate time for it... MAy be this weekend for sure!!...However I did not read any texts.... for it. But i bet you can find them. Hey I just remembered that ... NDB- ADAwebsite has a list of text books to read..u might want to check that...

Yes You SHOULD NOW the TRADE names............ Vimp ones atleast you should know... I dont know if this is a good Idea... But take a stroll down at CVS pharmacy...2-3 times for 10 mins... I guess that could help you get some names in your head..

Dental doc>>>>>>>> ASDA papers..........and decks are veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Useful! but do not entirely rely on them. Every person is going to be different...and so is his/her memory. Read up the things you are not sure of frm the TEXTS...
Questions are repeated... but at times they sound so darn confusing...so its important to read the question very carefully...

Im not sure If I should send my scores to Upenn...and BU... I got a call from U penn yesterday and Bu today.. so Im pretty thrilled.. i applied only in Oct 1st week... Pretty late I think...but am lucky to be called at both the places i applied to..

i applied to 3 in all. UPitt as well .. howver they wanted PArt 2 b4 nov 15th..so lets see if they will accpet my late scores..

I thank all you guys for the kind wishes.... Im glad I cleared the exam and did decently well. though not as well I wanted to....

Cya later....

Hi Jcv....
Im sorry I havent found time to reply to your question for soo long now. I was held up with an exam.
Well here are few of the things I had promised to write about..

Dental Public Health :-

Types of Studies( also called study design)
a)Descriptive type ? case reports, ecological (or correlational), Cross sectional
b)Analytic- Cohort, case control
Descriptive Studies
Case reports? Is one in which a Individual cases of unusual disease are studied for their clinical features and disease progression. No cocorelation is formed..just features etc are discussed.

Correlational studies?.A group is analyzed, not an individual. Also called ecologic study. Compares the frequency of disease to a particular exposure (like smoking to lung CA).

Cross sectional study?measures the disease and exposure status as they occur in a population?. Imagine taking a horizontal section of a tooth? is like studying the prevalence of a particular disease in the popln.

Analytic studies
Cohort study ? is one in which 2 group of people are observed ? exposed and control group. They are observed through ?time? with a particular exposure (say smokers) and then compared how many in each group develop the disease (Lung CA). You are going forward with time and hence its called Prospective study.. At times Prospective Cohort.

Case Control? From the name you can guess? You start with the cases and study their exposure to a factor. Observing a group of Lung CA patients and another group without Lung CA..and comparing how many smoked in each group?Basically you are going in a reverse direction. Hence called Retrospective Study.

Incidence: Is the # of NEW cases added to the population of a particular disease in a SPECIFIC TIME PERIOD.
Formula= New cases in a time period/ Total Population

Prevalence: Is the Proportion of a particular disease in the population. Not related to Time.
Formula: Number of Cases/ Total Population

Incidence of Exposed: means?A bunch of People are exposed to smoking and what is the incidence of Lung CA in them?
Formula: Number Exposed to Smoking/ Total Number who get the disease.

Incidence of Unexposed: Similarly?
Formula: Number Unexposed/ Total who get the disease.

For Some one who is really interested in knowing about Mean, Standard Deviation, Variance etc?.This website would give a comprehensive reading for it. It will take not more than 1 hour to read all ten pages?
http://www.cdc.gov/epo/dih/MiniModules/sd_sem/page01.htm

You can also go thru this one for mean, median mode explanations? They are called Measures of Central Dispersion.
http://www.zone101.com/LearningZone/MathZones/theory/grade6/meanmode.htm

http://www.manatee.k12.fl.us/sites/elementary/palmasola/mathlabtutstat1.htm

?????..About your Q jcv, as to where I read this?I did not read it in any book as I was taught about this in Class. And I gave my exam in 3 weeks..so did not find time for reading Perio Flaps from the text (which would have been Glickman) nor the Cast Gold restotations?

But you might want to try the books ADA mentions on their reference text book list at the NDB website.

Will keep you guys informed about my BU and Upenn Interviews?I have to start preparing for it....You guys>>> Keep studying really hard and you all will do Great!!. I wish I had more time for Part II I would have scored above 90 (well not over confidence but ?It's self confidence)

Im sure if you think you can?. YOU WILL!! I heard this some where... Atleast say you'll try and then give it your best shot...Well, I will write soon? Hope this stuff allays some anxiety in all the part II preparers. Keep the faith and study like crazy!

Im sorry for the extra long posts in this thread....

hi all.......
i finished my part2 ....and i would love if i could be of any help to everyone preparing for part 2..
i only studied for 2 months & so couldn't revise the textbooks.....i studied 2004 dental decks & all released exams.....kaplan review for prosthetic ,pharmac & operative...
what i felt after the exam was they don't stress much on technical questions but more on behaviour science....public health( 😡 )
so i would suggest everybody to read more about public health sp...clinical trials, crosssectional studies..and behaviour science....modeling,reinforcements.....etc
ofcourse flourides are very imp for exam...there is always question about ameloblastoma or any other bone cyst.
anug, herpes ,candidiasis are invariably asked....also should be very thorough with squ cell car.
this all i can remember now.....
hope this helps
gud luck to alll......

Hi Gorur...

As one of u asked what to study for Dental public health... I suggest take a look at the text books ADA has recommended on their website....
I didnt have time to do that.. but I wud have if i had the time...
the list of text books can be foound here...
http://www.ada.org/prof/ed/testing/natboard/reference.asp
take a look...
Study hard!!!!

hi even i couldn't study anything other then decks (2004) & kaplan...for public health...but there are 3 sites which are given in this forum only by uabdentist......i think that was helpful too......
but i didn't study anyhting lse then these....i suggest everybody to find out more about public health as we being foreign dentist would have never known about those questions realted to osha, behaviour sci.....etc

thanx for the good advice
it sure will prove to be useful for all of us

Hi Guys..i Took Part 2 December 13-14th.and I Am Hopeless..a Lot Of Unexpected Questions..i Think I Am Gonna Have To Find Unreleased Exam Questions Like 2000,2001 Or 2002 ..the Newest One That I Have Is 1993..
Anyone Knows How To Find Those Materials..?

Well though I had given the link before.... some still asked about patient management textbooks...Here is....

This is a list from the ada website...

Patient Management (Dental Public Health and Occupational Safety, Behavioral Science)

Abrams, R.G., Chambers, D.W., Dental Communication. Appleton-Centry-Croft.
Weinstein, P., Milgrom, P., and Getz, T., Oral Self Care: Strategies for Preventive Dentistry.
University of Washington, Seattle, Continuing Dental Education.
Burt, A., Eklund, S.A., Dentistry, Dental Practice and the Community. Saunders.
Jong, A.W., Community Dental Health. Mosby.
Weintraub, Douglass, and Gillings, Biostats: Data Analysis for Dental Health Care Professionals. Cavco, Inc.
Harris, N. and Christen, A., Primary Preventive Dentistry.
Wright, Robin, Tough Questions, Great Answers. Quintessence Books

I didnt have time to go thru any of them... But if you have time and want a better score... u'd better be well prepared!
Give it your best ....Part II goers!!

your advise is really very helphful, thanks a lot, a person like you is very hard to find now. May I ask you what subject do you consider the most difficult, and what subject do you have the lowest score. What materials do you use in reviewing pharmacology, I think it's the most hardest for me, because of memorization. Thank you

You are most welcome...
I found Pharmac pretty difficult too as Its a little different than what I'd done back home...
I have a H in all except patient managment....where I have a L

I used Dental decks for Pharmac... and a friend who had taken pharmacology recently...helped me at it...

Im sure if you put in your efforts you'll be there..! Make sure you give it your heart and soul.... so later you dont have to say.. I wish I had not wasted time... I wish i'd put in a little more...

Keep us posted how the prep is going...

How did you do in your Part II? keep us posted....
Waiting eagerly!
Im sure you did well Buddy!

Hi UAB

am taking my part2 next week and wanted to ask you a couple of questions.
Is the distribution of queations similar to what they give in the tutorial or different. Also do you think the new unreleased exams are needed or the old released exams are enough for the prep.

hope to hear from you soon.

hi

this is for those who have taken part 2 already.

Are the case based questions included in the percentile score or are they just graded alphabetically (A, B) or H/L.

Also are the questions repeated as much as in part 1 or more/less?

thanks.

Im so sorry... I didnt see your post. Ive logged in everyday but still missed out checking this one. Well firstly, good luck for your test. Are you referring to the brochure as the tutorial...? well to be honest, in that moment of stress you really wont care which subject the question is coming from. Obviously you'd want to know which subject to stress more...but still.
I dont actually remember as to whether all subjects were tested as per their mark allotment, but im sure ADA will keep up their printed word.

And in the stress during the exam you really wont have time to identify where the question is coming from... infact i'd say just keep answering as per the question...and you'll be fine.

Well I had done only the last couple of papers I think 1983 onwards...But plz plz plz do all the papers..atleast the released ones and especially the ones with cases. If you can get your hands on the unreleased ones good for you...but dont waste your time looking for unreleased and not solving the released papers. Unreleased exams- Ive never seen or solved...so sorry cannot comment on their validity or importance.

Happy studying~

Hey Lazaro:

Not a problem buddy... SDN has given me a lot already... Hope you do well too!

And just a little request for all Part II people... Please post what questions you felt were new/ repeated/important in your exams.......for the others who are preparing for part II. Thanks.

Good day everyone~

Dentwiz:
Yes everything is included in the percentile score. Some things are repeated from previous papers..and some from dental decks... read them well.. but they are not enough...grab a text book and see what you feel is not explained well in the decks.
Thankx~

Higuys,
i'm also planning to give part 2 soon...but a little confused...i was thinking whether to start with textbooks ( which i think will take lot of time to finish) or simply start reading decks n browse text books in between??also tell if kaplan's book is useful or not?? some other "must have " materials?? any advices??
