Hello SDN world, I am in need of some advice. A quick background of myself, I am currently a CA-1, who is a bit displeased with my current program. I feel that education takes the back-burner and we're grossly overworked in this program. My displeasure for this and other problems which are not worth mentioning has led me to search for vacancies at other programs. My question for you SDN world, Is it safe to apply to these other programs? Would there be any repercussions from my current program for doing so? Especially, if after going through this process I don't get in at the other programs? Please, share your advise, it will be deeply appreciated.

I don't know how this stuff works. However, you should share which programs you are talking about so that those of us who are applying can stay away from them.

You know you have to get a letter from your program director to even apply to transfer programs, right? Of course your program director will be unhappy with you if you basically tell him that you think the program he is responsible for sucks, even if it really does suck. If you have a good relationship with the PD, then it makes things a little better. You should probably come up with another reason why you are seeking transfer though.

There are also few if any available CA2 spots available each year. You also have to decide how competitive you would be for an open spot.

If you've had a significant personal problem that will make it terrible for you to stay there, then it might be worth trying to transfer, otherwise given the low likelihood of successful transfer and the high likelihood of making your current situation worse if you ask to transfer, I'd say you should probably stay put.

If you could find someone williing to do a residency swap, then it might be better than just trying to transfer to an open spot. I don't know much about swaps, but I have seen people post about them on sdn several times.

I'm on the same boat. New management and we ain't getting along. Wish I could say it's easy to leave, but it is not. Think the best option would be to suck it up, stay put and realize that these people cannot stop the clock. Think that's what I'm gonna do before things get really bad. Good luck though. Maybe you will have better luck than me.

most other programs will not talk to you if you haven't told your program you want to leave -- against the honor code. is that the only reason you want to go -- that you think the program stinks? if so, best to suck it up. if not, and you have another personal reason for wanting to leave your program will likely help you and understand... thats my experience. dude, the grass might not be so much greener elsewhere. a resident left my program last year for someplace they thought would be better and they are very very unhappy and wish they had never left.... just fyi.
