Hi everyone,

I am currently a sophomore and am planning to take the MCAT next April. I want to take a Kaplan course over the summer, but I have not taken physics yet. I didn't taken physics in high school either. As of now, I am scheduled to take physics my junior year during the fall and spring semesters. The nice thing about the Kaplan course is I can take it over the summer and then retake it in the fall or spring for free. Do you guys think it would be a waste to take the course over the summer without physics?

Also, I can take physics over the summer along with the Kaplan course. Is that a better option?

Thanks

Not trying to offend you, but this is an awful idea.

Taking an exam prep course when you are not prepping for an exam is pointless.

Plus, the value of a Kaplan course doesn't stem from the classroom review time, it stems from the extra review materials and full-length exams. Sitting in on the classroom lectures, then waiting 6 months and listening to the same lectures again, isn't going to give you any kind of a substantial head-start.

Plus, unless I misunderstood the HSG, in order to re-take the course for free, you have to complete all of the required study material and sit for all of the full-length practice exams.

Well the thing is I was going to start prepping for the exam this summer, even though it is kind of early. Do you not think that is a good idea? Would it be better for me to just study on my own, then take the Kaplan course in the winter?

Take Kaplan course if you have the money and time. By the way, no one seriously attends Kaplan classroom session to learn stuffs, especially the new stuffs.

If you are really worried about MCAT just buy some commercial test prep books and browse through over the break.

Do you guys think it would be a good idea to take Physics over the summer? Or should I just take it junior year while studying for the MCATS also?

You should definitely not take Kaplan without having taken physics - it would just be confusing and there's no way you could learn it from Kaplan. Thus, there's really no reason to take the course just yet. What might be a better idea is to get the full Exam Krackers set of books and start reviewing all of the non-physics stuff now. Then, take Kaplan once you've taken/are taking physics. (I just finished Kaplan but also have the EK books, and I think the combination of the two is not overkill)
