Hey everyone,

I'm currently getting everything together to begin re-applying in June. At the moment, I'm on the upper 1/3rd of the wait list at one of my states MD schools. I applied the first time two years ago to only a handful of schools and was put on the upper 1/3rd of the wait list at the same school I'm waitlisted at now. Unfortunately, I realized a little too late last summer that I may not be getting in after having some false hope and quickly re-took the MCAT and re-applied. Unfortunately, i did a point worse. I had also applied to a few DO schools but it was already very late in the season (sept) and I got no play. I retook my MCAT for a third time this past Jan and received a 30M (10,9,11). I realized I didn't want to make the same mistake as last year and started to get things ready to apply early as possible, and very broadly. I'm looking to apply to around 12-15 MD schools and 5-7 DO schools in total. Here are my current stats:

- 3.6 (listed as a 3.68 in AACOMAS, but 3.6 in AMCAS) cGPA.

-MCAT: 30M (10,9,11) (This was my third time taking it. Scored a 27P the first time and 26O the second)

- 5 and a half years experience working in an Orthopedic surgeon's office/ PT clinic as a Physical Therapist Tech. Also have work experience in the office as a Medical Assistant / Scribe.

- 40 Hours shadowing my former pediatrician as well as several other physicians.

- College athlete. Played for my College's Rugby team for 4 years and was also the Captain and Vice President of the club.

- Played my first season of Semi Professional Rugby.

- Was hired by my college's athletic department to tutor athletes in various science courses.

- Volunteered as a part time Assistant Coach for my college's Rugby Team.

- ~200 Hours as a volunteer wrestling coach at my former high school.

- Active member of my colleges Pre-health Club and Alpha Epsilon Delta.

- 8 Hrs as a medical volunteer at a Triathlon.

- Several other volunteer experiences.

- Listed as an economically disadvantaged student.

I'm looking to apply very broadly and need a little help in figuring out the schools I'd have the best shot at getting into. Also, I'm a VA resident. Thanks for the help everyone

I'm really glad to hear you did so much better on the MCAT this third time. The fact that you were wait-listed at your state school twice previously means they are interested in you - basically, you meet all the basic qualifications for their class and they wouldn't mind having you - but you just haven't distinguished yourself as someone who really stands out. In that case I'm a little concerned about your personal statement/secondaries because that's where you can really sell yourself, especially if you've got average stats but really good ECs (which you do). You should take a good hard look at how you're rolling the information out through this application series and make adjustments as needed. Do try to submit only but only when your application is strong. Good luck with your reapp!!

I think the biggest problem was I applied so late in the cycle the first two times. I didn't get my mcat back until mid august the first time i applied and only did a few secondaries. This application cycle, I only interviewed at one school, and it was in the end of February so I was pretty much already interviewing for a wait list spot. I'm finally doing things right by applying as early as possible and not waiting months on end for everything to be verified. I believe my personal statement is quite strong, i had a few of our pre-health advisors work on it with me and several other people have read it and had nothing but good things to say.

I'm trying to compile a list of schools that I would be most competitive at... anyone care to give a hand?

Thanks everyone for the feedback and help, but I actually just got a call from EVMS and i'll be attending there in august!!!
