And when I say dumb, I mean really over-the-top fzucking ridiculous. I got kicked out of a summer program at UPenn when I was a SOPHOMORE IN HIGH SCHOOL for drinking and now Boston wants a written explanation from someone of authority at Penn. Is this stupid little mistake from, like, six years ago really gonna keep me out of medical school? I've tried to put a positive spin on it saying that my experiences at Penn prompted me to be on an alcohol awareness committee/judicial committee at NU, but it just seems so dumb that they really are going through all this trouble to find out "the truth."

Wow... sorry to hear about that. The situation sounds kinda serious, but then again, your positive spin definitely seems like it will help. Have you spoken to the folks at Penn about the situation yet? I think if you explain the situation as you did, they'll be able to work with you, and possible include the additional information in the letter they write to BU. Good luck with this.

How did they find out about that from high school? ANyhoe, that is sooo rediculous. You know what, I had an arrest for the dumbest thing (I won't even begin to explain) but it didn't inhibit my undergrad apps (though I had to explain). They should just calm down and realize it was so long ago. They must be very conservative. Anyhow, I think putting a + spin on it is the best you can do, and hope for the best. I'm sorry for their anal-retentiviness.

You'll still get in - I got kicked out of the U.S. Air Force Academy for INCREDIBLE stupidity 8 years ago and I still got in. It's all in how you've learned from it - the fact that you were on an alcohol awareness committee certainly shows that you took it seriously. I took my mistake very seriously, learned from it, moved on, and I think my medical schools appreciated that.

I'm editing because I read your thread more closely.

This shouldn't be a big deal. It stinks that you have to get someone to explain it for you, but you were 15 years old at the time.

VFrank: I am worried for you because I recall this thread from way back when you were filling out your apps. Did you not disclose the courses you took at Penn as college courses taken in high school? I remember that was a subject of debate here. If you never did disclose those courses, I would just forego a letter to BU because they will find out from Penn that you had registered for courses and you will get in trouble for not having reported those courses.

No, I am sending the schools I am applying to an additional letter explaining that I didn't think the courses were required. I am also having Penn send them a transcript that shows my one "W". This is so stupid, I just hate having to go through all this. Everyone tries to make their application error-free and I hate having to be the one with ten million other hoops to jump through. Does anyone else feel they're having unecessary complications, or am I the only one?

The process is quite arduous. My application has been held up until now because I kept on remembering different summer programs that I had to submit transcripts for. I just finally got the last one in and am ready to click "submit", but it could have just as easily been me having so many problems (because I was tempted to not report some of these courses)... I feel for you, man, but just realize that this will make your eventual acceptance so much sweeter. 🙂

Yeah, next time you think twice before screwing up.
Just kiddin, and sorry about this. If you can find someone who would try not to speak ill of you.
Good luck!

I think the fact that you reported shows an abundance of caution, honesty, and integrity. While some schools may be dickheads over it, many more will see that you not only can own up to what many people do- make drinking mistakes in high school- but also have learned from it.

BU is notorious for being dickheads (I shouldn't say that because I'm going to grad school there, but...) They take your secondary money and run. I am not surprised that they are being ****monkeys, but I would be surprised if many other medical schools even cared.

just stay positive about this, explain what happened, how you've changed, etc. it sounds like they just want to see how you've responded to this, what you've done since, and most importantly that the problem is in the past, not the now.

Relax. We all worry so much, but in the end many things don't matter one way or another.

actually, i finished and submitted my application on june 2, and b/c the people at AMCAS are not very bright, i was not processed until july 12. it was totally and completely their fault, and every time they messed something up they put me at the end of the list for verification. how is that fair? i keep meaning to call them and ask for a supervisor, b/c i totally think they should give me some money back. i am paying them a ton of money for their gross incompetence, and i don't think it's fair.
