I'm giving a short spiel to the more junior students in my MD/PhD program next week on applying for residency, and specifically on looking at research-focused residency programs. For this year's grads (or anyone else who wants to chime in), do you have any deep words of wisdom? Specifically:
1. What were the most important factors you considered when making up your rank list? Did these change over time?
2. Are you going to short-track if this is available? Why or why not? If you are planning on short-tracking at one program and pursuing fellowship at another institution, do you already have your short-list of programs ready?
3. How did you find out about the programs you applied to? How many interviews did you go on?
4. Approximately when did you have your specialty choice made?
This forum was useful to me when I was making these decisions last year, and I'd like to make it easier for the next group of students coming through.
