I am trying to pick classes for next semester and have a question about the pre-reqs at UF.

Biochem (4 cred)-Do we need the lab? I have heard mixed things

Molecular bio or class genetics class emphasizing molecular bio-this is what I am worried about. In order to take molecular bio of the gene or cell at my school, I have to have already taken genetics and cell biology. The problem is I am not a bio major and will not be taking those courses. If I had electives left, I would, but I don't. I already have more than enough credits wracked up and dont want to take more than needed.

So, the question is, if you have been interviewed/accepted at UF, how did you meet this requirement? Would a genetics course suffice?

Thanks!

Oh UF and their biochemistry requirement! They are VERY particular about this pre-req, I think your best bet is to call admissions and ask them specifically which course number at your university they will accept. When I called they had a list of course numbers for all of the Florida schools, but if you're out of state they most likely will have that information too. I learned the hard way I should have called before I took my biochemistry course, I took a biology based biochemistry course but UF only accepts the chemistry based biochemistry offered at my university (I'm taking my pre-reqs at UNF). I'm hoping if I get accepted they will work with me on the biochemistry course I already took, but I'll have to wait and see. And the lab is required, only work around if is your university doesn't offer the lab then you don't need to worry about it.

Regarding the molecular biology pre-requisite, I took molecular cell biology and at my interview the admissions office told me that was sufficient. I'm pretty sure others took only genetics and that was enough, but again I would suggest you call or email so they can let you know for sure. I've found their admissions office to be extremely helpful! Hoped I helped you some!

Yeah, I will call them tomorrow. I was looking at classes last night and got too impatient to wait until today to call lol

Hoping genetics will suffice. Really dont want to take bunches of pre-reqs for molecular bio if I can get around it

Thanks and good luck!

UF works with you depending on your school. For example is says you need 4 credits of biochem but my school doesn't offer the lab. And certain classes can take the place of others like prokaryotic bio can count as microbiology

I called, very helpful and friendly admissions office. Yes, they accept classes depending on the available courses at your school. Thanks for the responses guys 🙂
