I've read on these boards about people who do one grand tour of NYC schools (NY/Columbia/Cornell/etc) in a whirlwind week. Those who pulled this off, I am wondering, how did you coordinate it? Were you simply lucky and got the invites at the same time, or did you call the other NYC schools after you heard from the first one? I got an NYU invite today, and I also applied to Columbia. If at all possible, I would like to fly out there only once. Should I call Columbia's Admissions office and prod them, gently? Should I wait a couple of days to schedule my NYU interview? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

I did a whirlwind tour of NYC med schools (Columbia on Wed, Cornell on Thursday, and NYU on Friday, then stayed for the weekend). First I received interview invite from Cornell, then Columbia a few days thereafter, and I have not heard from NYU a few weeks after my application was complete, so I called NYU and scheduled the interviews that way. I'd suggest you call Columbia very nicely; tell them you have an interview invite in NYC and would like to find out if you have been selected for an interview. If Columbia has not reached a decision, then express your interests and ask when can you hear back from them. Wait a couple of days before scheduling NYU. Good luck!

Just don't schedule them on the same day, and you'll be absolutely money. Everything in Manhatten is just a subway ride away, so don't worry about having to get a hotel room near the school. In fact, you can stay in New Jersey for less than half the price. I recommend staying in Newark, NJ if money is a real big issue and then taking the train from Penn Station in Newark to Grand Central in NYC. Of course, the best option is to stay with a student host, if possible.
If you've never been to NYC before, you really ought to schedule a day for tourism if schedule permits. It's such a cool city!

Thanks so much for the input. Z, that's great advice on calling Columbia. I think I will do it Monday. I can't believe you interviewed at 3 schools in 3 days!
