So I am currently on my Post-Bacc Pre Vet course, and it is going rather well. My classes are proving challenging but I am obtaining good grades. Being interested in horse racing I have organized that I spend my semester break in Florida with a trainer (rather well known, KY Derby winner, and BC Winner), Spring Break at a premier horse farm in KY, and with a well known vet out there.

My networking just seems to be snowballing and I have ins with a huge amount of prominent racing trainers, and breeders. Having worked around 1000s of horses from cart horses, to polo ponies, to everything in between the thought of going into racing is rather intriguing. The money at the top end is comparable to a vets salary (especially if you factor in an extra 7 years, and the $200,000 of debt you will not get into).

Has anyone else has any experience or insight into the industry? What parts am I missing out?

THANKS

Well, you aren't going to get top horses right away for one. Another, you'll start out as a groom/assistant trainer and you'll have to work your way into a trainer position. Also, those guys are all over the country going from meet to meet. They'll be in New York for a couple months, Kentucky for a few, then in Arkansas. Bascially you will not have a home unless you are able to train on the farm and race off the farm. Also, it is the most up and down game unless you are the one with the money (owners). I recommend a good education (vet school) and then you can have fun, treat horses, own horses, but you won't have to be on the road all the time, kissing owners asses and what not.

This is my opinion, you are big boy and can make your own decisions.
