I'm just wondering if anyone could offer a good comparison, or any info at all on the multiple programs in the chicago area (size, # of rotation sites, competiveness, fellowship opportunities, resident happiness, etc). I'm not from Illinois myself but am considering Chicago for residency.

Thanks!

First, look at the AMA FREIDA website to compare sizes and get basic nitty gritty details.
Advocate Christ is a great place. The PD when I interviewed there a few years ago was upbeat, happy. The people I know who rotated through there as students thought the place was great. Nice facility. They do feel they have to promote their program incessantly, though, since Children's and UC is in the area... But Chicago's a big place and has enough for everybody... if I wanted to live there, this would have been my #1 choice.

chicago programs have been discussed extensively in the past. do a search of "chicago" in past threads in the pediatrics forum and you will find plenty of good posts.

Hi guys! I'm a third year looking into Peds programs in Chicago-- my boyfriend will be headed to Chicago for law school so I definitely need to end up there! :)

Any commonly known wisdom about the area programs? Which are most respected? How are the University of Chicago's and Northwestern's programs in particular? Thanks so much!!!

for what it's worth, I'm not from the midwest, and i interviewed at U of Chicago and Cook County-
Loved U of C- very focused on education/residents as teachers, which is what I'm into- but they had a very open attitude, and I got the sense you'd be supported in whatever you decided to focus on.
Cook County wasn't bad per say, but I got the impression the program is on its way out- smaller and smaller classes of residents each year- rumor (again, take hear-say for what it's worth) has it that bc Il medicaid covers nearly every kid in the state, parents are choosing to take their kids to other hospitals. That said, I liked the PD, I liked the drs I met, felt like it would be a good environment to learn in- but I don't think you'd have the same opportunities you'd have at other programs.
