For those who know what they're talking about, what are your thoughts on Hopkins as a school?

Comparisons to UPenn would be nice, if applicable =).

Both are phenomenal schools but my choice would be UPenn. Philly is a great city and I would gather much better than Baltimore. It is my top choice so I am a biased, but its curriculum is so awesome. You get to be on the wards a semester earlier. The medical center is awesome as well as CHOP (UPenn is affiliated with CHOP). Since I know I want to specialize within peds (pediatric oncology to be more specific), CHOP would be a great place to do clinical rotations in and perhaps residency too being that it is #1 in the country. The campus is gorgeous and I love that all the schools are within close proximity. UPenn students do very well on the boards as you can imagine because the curriculum rocks. I sat in on a class in my interview and I absolutely loved it. The students were so chill and really loved UPenn. Phew! I babble too much but I really love UPenn and would go there above all schools even JHU which I applied to as well. Best of luck with that!

all the things you argue for UPenn are true with Hopkins, including early clinical years, great curriculum, great clinical training, a superb (though not #1) peds program, etc.

Is Baltimore vs Philly the only argument here? Perhaps the difference between JHU and UPenn undergrad too?

Can anyone comment on the difference in name? Is Hopkins vs UPenn comparable to, say, Princeton vs. Columbia?

I don't know much about the UPenn program and campus, but i know a bit a little bit about Hopkins.

PRO:
1) Welch Medical Library has amazing resources, is beautiful, and printing is free

2) the med students i know are not cutthroat and are very nice and intersting (opposed to Hopkins undergrad premeds are not indeed a bit cutthroat)

3) friendly professors

4) superb reserach facilities and proximity to the public health school

5) reputation, which is second to none

CON:
1) east baltimore is not the most beautiful area, but then again, this means great community service opportunities

2) yep, the only con i think is location

JHU would be considered slightly better than UPenn in terms of residency director preference, so I do agree with the Columbia vs Cornell comparison. However, it all boils down to location (closeness to family, weather, overall environment of the school, students, safety issues) and your feeling when you interviewed/2nd look weekend. Both schools are phenomenal and you will be well off no matter which school you go to. Get in contact with some students at the interview if you have not already interviewed. If you have and you get into both (keeping my fingers crossed), then go to 2nd look weekend and get as much a feel for the school and students as you can. As aforementioned, good luck with everything and I hope you go where you will be happiest(which is the most important thing).

JH is awesome...cuz I'm there.

Think twice about spending all of those years in Baltimore. It's dangerous and boring. I don't know which school is better academically, but I can say from experience that Philly is a better place to live than B-more on almost every level.

and philly isn't dangerous...BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!

Baltimore is awesome if you spend time there and find the little secrets to the city, as a tourist it sucks.

Baltimore has a very high crime rate- higher than philly. Baltimore lacks the cultural benefits that a city the size of philly provides. The racial tension in baltimore is nearly palpable.

There are Three (3) kinds of doctors in this world ONLY 3:

1. Good Doctors
2. Better Doctors
3. Hopkins Doctors

Have you been to Balto?

😕

anyone know anything about the baltimore neighborhood in comparison to new haven, connecticut?

i'm skeptical about neighborhood arguments, because tons of people told me that i'd be dodging bullets in new haven, when in fact the town is perfectly fine. Kids here stay on campus anyways, so it's no big deal if the immediate area sucks.

They say you'll be dodging bullets in Balto, but I have yet to do so...Balto compeletely depends on where you live.

steve hsu es '04 please stand up

rackd8ball,

when did you hear from JHU, and how long post-interview?

congrats!

thank you! and i guess the jig is up...

interviewed 10/3, the committee met on 11/18.
heard back by phone call on 11/21. letters went out 11/24.

after the november meetings, i think they meet every month or so. apparently there are "thursday" and "friday" committees; that is, the same group does all thursday interview kids, and another group handles all friday kids.

i smell yalies.

My decision on where to go to school last year was exactly what you are asking: Hopkins or Penn. It wasn't an easy decision but I had a gut feeling the whole time. I liked Penn because I was comfortable with the city (Philly is a cool place...nice park to run in, some nice areas to live that are convenient to downtown...closer to snowboarding than Hopkins, family is closer), the students seemed like really fun and cool people, I am interested in becoming some kind of pediatric-related specialist maybe, and their curric seemed pretty cool to me...they have only pass-fail in the beginning, right? (good for some people and not necessarily for others) And Gaye just gave me that warm and fuzzy feeling inside...made me feel very comfortable with the school.

And then there was Hopkins. I originally didn't know whether I was going to apply to Penn because I wanted to see something else besides a city 10 minutes from where I grew up. When I visited Balitmore at first I'll have to admit I wasn't too impressed. But after coming back and exploring the city...I really liked it. There are tons of awesome ethnic restaurants, really cool bars and clubs, theater and symphony stuff going on, sports teams, and being close to DC is nice when you wanna go out all night. And when it came down to it, I loved the school. I'll admit it, I was kind of infatuated with the school from the beginning, and when I visited I just felt so comfortable with the students and was so impressed by the med school and the public health school that deep down I knew I would be happy here. I REALLY liked how the curriculum was set up. They start you off first year pretty lightly and then they increase the work load from there...so you really get a chance to get acclimated to med school (which believe me is really nice 🙂 It's just not too crazy at first, it's cool...and it actually isn't that bad now either. But anyway, I just had a gut feeling about the school. And then when it came down to financial aid, Hopkins blew Penn out of the water.

So I chose to go to Hopkins, and I'm sooo glad I did. I seriously love it here. Our education so far has been outstanding, and I feel like I am learning an insane amount of stuff every week. It's pretty awesome. But in any case, if you have the same luck with Penn, you may have a tough decision....but it's a good decision. If you are really torn between the schools still, you really can't go wrong either way. But congrats on getting in, that's awesome. 🙂

(In the argument over the issues of "cultural activities" that never seems to end....if you want more more more more more more, then go to new york city. For MOST.....note the case......people, splitting hairs over cultural activities between B'more and Philly is effing pointless. They both have cultural activities. If you absolute must have your weekly fill of various different "cultural" activities then I think Philadelphia may have several more places to go. But I've done a ton of stuff in Balimore and I really like it. I know people who are happy with Balimore and Philly because of what they offer, and I know some who hate the cities for what the do and don't offer. It's all based on what frame of reference you have and what your expectations are, which are different for all of us.)
