Post bacc student; Science GPA: 3.65; Overall GPA: 3.60

Do I still stand a chance of getting into an MD program if I drop Orgo II, apply in June, and retake Orgo II over the summer? My orgo II grade would be sent in to schools by late July/ early August (class ends July 30th).

I got an A in Orgo I, but this semester it's looking like a B or worse. My reasoning is that dropping orgo will give me more time to focus on the other two classes I'm taking (physics II and bio II) plus I'll have more time to focus on the MCAT in mid June. Chances are I'll do better (I'm not going to speculate too much though) in orgo II if I retake it over the summer considering I've already seen half the material.

Thoughts?

Would you get a W on your transcript?

If yes, finish out the class and apply. A W being the most recent thing on your transcript won't help you.

If no, sure, why not.

Honestly, if you're going to get the B I'd suggest just sticking it out. They just want to know you can survive it. Even a C, possibly, though I'll probably get flamed for that. At this point, one post-bac to another, just make it through one bad grade will not kill you.

Another thing to keep in mind, is at this point in the semester, you're probably going to be double-paying for the same class. I personally would hate to do that.

If I were in your shoes I would bust *** trying to improve my orgo grade. A W in a post bac isn't the same as a W in undergrad....especially it being so recent and if asked to explain it you most likely wont have a great reason besides I couldn't handle a couple classes at once. At this part in a semester you still have lots of time to improve your grade so you should be able to pull it out especially if you had a solid understanding in orgo I which it looks like you did.

Also, it's almost laughable how true it is that applying early is one of the most important factors in the whole admissions game. I personally wouldn't want to be sending in transcripts early-mid August and end up getting bumped further down the line.

Thanks!

Another big concern of mine is that it'll look terrible going from an A to a B at best (more likely B-, C+ given that grades are usually lower than expected).

Would it really bump me down the line? My understanding was that it would just be submitted as a late update just like any other class that you list as "projected" on AMCAS. Would it be any different than the biochem class that I'm listing I will take in the fall?

So schools will definitely wait until they see the grade before sending me a secondary?? My MCAT scores don't come out until July 19th so I figured that is close enough to the time I'll be getting my summer transcript in.

Thanks!

This does not look terrible. At least in my post-bac, it was pretty well known that if you were good at orgo at all, you were stronger either in 1 or 2. It's not going to be a big deal to get a B.

Just took the midterm and did ok... kinda. I'll still be in the B range and I'm going to bust my tail from here on out.

Thanks for your support everyone! I was legit planning on skipping the test and dropping this morning.
