Hi all,

What are people's thought on OHSU for path? Their website is not that informative, and I'm wondering what the program's reputation is on the west coast and what kind of applicants they usually take. Any other info appreciated, too. thanks,

Thanks for the advice, skinknee. I had found some of those threads previously but was glad to read them again. I'm curious as to the relative/recent silence about OHSU's program - my overactive imagination oscillates between thinking it's fantastically awesome and everyone there wants to keep it a secret, or that it's a black hole of suck and everyone is too busy grossing needle core biopsies until midnight to post on SDN. Obviously neither one is true 🙂 Im just frustrated that I cant find a list of previous and current residents to get a better feel for the place.

OHSU sounds like another sleeper program. Heard that their residents have autonomy in being allowed to work up their cases/order stains etc. on their own, before showing cases to staff (with rare exception e.g. teeniest biopsy fragments). It's not a big deal if a stain is omitted and the case gets delayed as staff are comfortable with training residents.

Hi All!

I'm beginning to look into future fellowship prospects. These 18-24 months in advance application timelines are crazy.

Anyhow, I'm reviving this not-so-old-thread to find out if anyone has had any more recent experiences with or at OHSU? Also, does anyone know what the path job situation is in the Portland area? How about other parts of Oregon? I've been hearing great things about Portland as a place to live from non-path people, but am wondering if anyone here has had any first hand experience?

Thanks!
JF

while i certainly will defer to any path resident in the program i went to OHSU for medical school and i will be returning this summer to start a fellowship. i will have to lean toward it being a sleeper program, like the medical school. having lived in Portland for 8 years i can tell you there is no better place i have found (and i have looked). the job market is tight, though. cost of living is high, pay is relatively low but the quality of living more than makes up the difference.

hope that helps. if there are any specific questions anyone has about the city or the university i can help, though my knowledge of the residency program is limited.

Thanks GeoLeoX! What exactly does "sleeper" mean?

Sleeper defined by urban dictionary = Often reffering to what appears to be a ordinary looking stock commuter car that is anything but stock under the hood.

To which I say:

Ditzel

A word used to describe any part of the body that is not ordinarily appropriate for everyday conversation.
"Susan is always walking down the hall with her ditzels hanging out."
