Hey everyone. Im considering attending Pitt, but its one of the schools I haven't seen much about here on SDN. What are your general opinions on Pitt? If there are any current students out there, what drew you to Pitt? How competitive are Pitt students for specialty residencies? Thanks everyone!

hey man, saw ur pitts vs. columbia thread. i think if ur pretty set on specializing then it's columbia. however, if ur half-half about specializing then id go with pitts. because at pitts u can still specialize and learn a great clinical deal with other stuff you mentioned. at columbia, ud most likely have to go with a gpr/aegd program after u finish to be a GP.

I actually chose Pitt over Columbia, and I don't regret it. For more info search for a thread by me two years back called "Pitt Vs. Columbia." When I heard that Pitt had more or less the same specialty numbers for ortho (which I'm no longer interested in, haha) as Columbia, that took a lot of the weight off of the Columbia side of the scales. Plus, I just liked the school at Pitt a lot better, nicer, newer, much better neighborhood.

@Vicviper. Thanks for the info. I"ll be sure to look that thread up. If you don't mind me asking, do you know about the range of prices I could expect to find for housing near campus? Esp. for like 2 or 3 bedroom apts? Thanks again.

If you've got a family, you might want to look into buying a house. I know that you can find 3 bedroom houses in decent areas for under 100k. A few of my friends did this, and they just rent the other rooms out to friends or other students at the undergrad.

For apartments? I was paying 750 for a huge one bedroom in a really nice part of town - many of my friends are paying maybe 550 for 1 BR's in decent areas, so I think you'd probably pay around 1k or less probably.

Pittsburgh is one of the cheapest big cities in the country to live in.
