Well moreso just in general, in terms of faculty quality, opportunities, research, etc.

The current thoughts are that community programs vary widely and there is no way to reliably choose the best ones, so this question needs context or a more narrow scope to be reasonable.

I don't know much about SCVMC specifically (although I understand it to be a relatively good program). Legacy has a very strong PCCM division and 2 very busy ICUs.

Prov Portland has one of the only true interventional Pulm docs in the state. But he's PP and I'm not sure how much opportunity a resident there would have to work with him.

Hard to compare community programs across state IMO.

SCVMC is a solid community program in Northern California.
Particularly strong in critical care as well.

IMHO, SCVMC is arguably one of the strongest community programs in California, if not in the country. They send a good number of people to Stanford for fellowship every year because of the strong affiliation with the med school (Stanford attendings rotate through SCVMC).

Jumping on this bandwagon... I grew up in California and am trying to get back for residency. I've read through some of the previous threads about the Cali programs and my impression is that the strongest programs for training and fellowships are: Cedars = Scripps > CPMC = SCVMC. Cedars is also unique in having a Primary Care track.
Anyone have comments on the Kaisers? And how do all these programs compare to the university-affiliated or non-top tier academic programs in California like UCLA-Harbor, UCLA-Oliveview, UCI, USC, UCDavis? Thanks!

I finished residency in internal medicine at SCVMC in 2005. I felt the clinical training was quite strong. I did not go on to fellowship but all of my co-residents that wanted a fellowship got one. I don't know more recent data but VMC has always generally had good placement. That being said, if there's a specific fellowship spot you want, especially in a competitive field, I suspect that may be tougher. One of my co-residents matched into GI but had to go several states away to do so.

As far as PCCM goes I don't think you'd have any problem with that. I know someone who finished there I want to say ?4 years ago who I worked with as an attending for a couple years who went back and is now a PCCM fellow.

As far as the Kaisers go, I do not know the placement records for oakland or san francisco, but I am an attending at santa clara. I don't supervise residents very often so I don't have the best insight, but my general impression is that the placement isn't quite as good as VMC. Plenty of residents have gone on to do fellowships but I also think there is a lot of self selection; I don't think most of the residents at kaiser plan to pursue fellowship anyway.
