Hi all, I am currently a psychology grad student, have been planning to be a neuropsychologist for years, and have recently been thinking about going back to do a post-bac after I finish my master's next year, and take med pre-reqs (I was a psych major so took none in undergrad). I always planned to work with medical patients as a neuropsychologist, but for many reasons (lack of job security, difficulty finding positions after post-doc, etc) I have been considering going the MD track with the goal of ending up doing much of the same work that I would have done as a neuropsych in a medical school/hospital. This usually connotes working with patients with neuro-oncological issues, TBI, etc coupled with research and possibly teaching duties. For just as many reasons (debt, many many more years of school, learning about things i'm not excited about--surgery/kidneys/etc, the often-described lack of life outside of medicine, malignant personalities, etc) I'm cautious about this new direction. Any of you out there that went through something similar or just have any good advice? Should I stick with what I know, psychology, and just hope I'm one of the lucky ones in a saturated field, or join you guys on the MD journey and hope I don't end up like the House of God guy? Thank you!!

*bump*

I too am interested in the medical path and would appreciate any advice from others on the board.

I think then you might have a niche with neurology/phychiatry type patients if thats the type of patients that you want to see and the kind that you're used to....

i'm interested in assessment of children specifically with learning/developmental disorders such as autism
