I apologize ahead of time for adding to the plethora of "help me rank these" threads that flood this forum this time of year...... but having a hard time deciding which to rank higher and could use all the help I can get. SDNers always seem to have perspectives that I haven't thought of. Was really impressed with both programs, and I'm sure I couldn't go wrong with either one.... but for what its worth:
UAB over memphis: 1. UAB has the eye ED, a huge plus I think. 2. I also like the UAB call schedule better- in house call, but having the post call day off is cool. You are done with primary call first year (memphis call spread over 2 years) 3. UAB has a greater regional/national reputation? 4. memphis has recently gone to 5 residents. I'm sure it will transition fine, but who knows what kind of change that could bring- possible decrease in surgical numbers? (they assured me nothing like that would change, but you never know). Meanwhile UAB is holding at a steady 5 and is not likely to change.
Memphis over UAB: 1. I feel like memphis is much more amenable to international work, which is really important to me. Many different international trips were mentioned- one for peds, another for plastics, another for cataract surgery. Residents don't have to take vacation time for this. 2. I really liked the PD at memphis. Seemed extremely approachable, and a resident advocate. 3. I really like the memphis wet lab with a structured wet lab curriculum and dedicated wet lab instructor.
Like I said though, I think both programs are downright quality training institutions, and I'd be happy to match at either
Thanks in advance for your time and your thoughts,
