First time poster here. I was recently accepted to UAB and Emory. I know that Emory is pretty well-known with people outside of medicine, but what's the situation for UAB?

What's UAB's reputation in the medical world like, especially outside the south? I'm just wondering since it seems to be slipping in the us new ranking (if that means anything)

I cant tell you a whole lot about its reputation outside of the south, but i have a bunch of classmates who interviewed there and chose my school instead solely based on what they said was a really impersonal and unfriendly feel around the school. You've obviously interviewed there so you've got your feel for it as well, but thats what ive been told. I cant speak to the academics at all though, so take it for what its worth lol.

Congrats by the way on your acceptances!

I don't live in the South and I never heard of it. I guessed UAB meant Auburn. Then I Googled it. I was wrong.

For Ophthalmology in particular Emory seems well known, but I would say that UAB is even more respected for their top-notch Ophtho training. They're both great schools I just hear more about UAB being a great place to train. It probably varies among other specialties.

UAB is great. I don't know about the reputation of the school, but for residency it's pretty well regarded from folks in the south. A lot of people from my school had UAB ranked highly for a lot of different specialties.

Emory as a medical school is more well known than UAB outside of the south. That said, UAB is well known for some great residency programs outside of the south, but so is Emory.

Uab's also offering me a 10,000 per year recruiting scholarship, so the cost is pretty comparable(actually I even save a little bit although I'm OOS. Leaning toward Uab right now (since they've been great to me), but I still have a few days to think it over. From responses you guys have given though, they seem pretty comparable...

Both places are strong in the south in most specialties. Since cost would be comparable, I'd say go with the city you like more, barring any niche interests that would be better at Emory (Infectious Disease).
