Anybody have any thoughts on wearing a uniform to an interview? I have several nice suits, but think wearing a uniform (it is a double-breasted all black suit with white shirt and ribbons and insignia) could really make you stand out...in a good way. Anybody else think so? Ideas?

What kind of uniform? Is this for the armed services or something that has a distinguished uniform? Or just some random outfit you have? If it is the latter, I would go with the traditional suit.

err... i'd be afraid people might mistake you for a very confused pilot. stick with a regular ol' suit

Bad idea. Especially if there are other people at the interview that had prior served in the armed forces who just dressed regular. 😉 (That would most certainly make you look like a major tool.)

Unless you are a WWII vet I don't think it is wise to do so. 🙄

Also, why play that up so much? I mean, I'm sure its already written in the app.

If I was an adcom, I would consider your commitment to dentistry first, then everything else, including your military record.

Good luck.

My thoughts.....I'm a military officer and I'm consistently surprised on where and why other military members think a uniform is appropriate...For example...what other profession get's married in their uniform? I'm very proud of my uniform, but I must say that I think it's inappropriate to wear at an interview....or as someone else put it you'd look like a "major tool". With that being said, I do think your service is a strength...but use it properly...a uniform is for military workplace and ceremony.

Cool...what branch are you? I know about the marrying thing...I actually wore a suit at my wedding! Ha! I RARELY wear the uniform outside of work and actually snicker to myself at people who wear it while traveling (esp. when they are an officer.)

I have interviewed twice so far wearing a suit (1 acceptance), I just have 2 interviews coming up where they traditionally have LARGE numbers of bodies present (USC, Pitt.) Thought it could be something to "stand out" in the minds of the faculty! 😉

Pitt has a lot of people doing military dentistry. In fact, they set aside a substantial amount of time during the interview to have a military recruiter (in my case, Navy) talk to us, and pretty much shove it down our throats. The school seems to really support the military, thus if there was one school that you might be ok wearing your uniform at, it would be Pitt. That said, I'd still go with a regular black suit.

I'm not going to lie, that uniform is pretty bad-ass. Especially with the rank on it. But..stick to the suit, keep the uniform for when you are attending military functions.
