Three Science courses in A semester

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's going to be challenging 😀.. I don't recommend for or against it, because you're going to be taking that many if not more science classes in one term in medical school.. but if you're working FT/studying for the MCAT/EC's etc, I would try to break it down.

I took Biochem, Analytical Chem, and Microbio all in the same semester and I got A-, A-, B+. It was tough but def possible. I wouldnt recommend it unless you are ready to put some long study hours in. Also I guess it all depends on who you are. One of my friends' dad triple majored in BIO, CHM, and Physics.

Im taking Molecular bio (which is awful). Biochemistry ( interesting but tough) and Developmental Bio (meh. whatever) as well as a senior thesis paper. When the wave of exams come around, I get pretty stressed. At midterms I had all A's and B. You can do it, but dont expect worlds of free time. 😎

This is my last undergrad semester and I'm taking Medical Entomology, Immunology,Ecology and Experimental Molecular Biology:scared:. College Algebra is my break class. Talk about hard! But I need all to graduate. As well as graduating it shows medical schools I can take a lot of hard classes together. Only do it if you are sure you can be sucessful. Hard hours with bad grades does you no good

I take it you feel the same way as I do about Molecular. My textbook for the course is worthless.

Here are two of my post-bac semesters, just off the top of my head...

Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry (lab/lecture)
Physics I
Physics I Lab
Molecular Biology
Genetics
Microbiology I
Microbiology I Lab

and...

Cell Biology
Cell Physiology
Biochemistry I
Physics II
Physics II Lab
Endocrinology

I did fine both semesters.

My molecular bio textbook was just full of a bunch of experiments that had been done to isolate some transcription factor or figure out the binding order of snrnps or some such ****. That class was amazingly boring. Every now and then, we'd talk about something pretty interesting, but it was mostly just memorizing useless facts.

I took between 17 & 21 hours of 300 & 400 level science/chemistry classes per semester for 4 semesters. It's doable.

I did it several times, sometimes all with labs on top. I don't think I could have graduated on time if I didn't. It wasn't that bad, just make sure you don't fall behind! I hate having two science exams in one day though, thats the worst. I always tried to schedule my hardest classes on opposite days (mw & tth) so that they couldn't overlap during the semester/finals.

Would anyone recommend for or against taking three science class a semester?

I think it depends on the classes and your particular strengths in each of those classes. What classes are you thinking of?

The only good thing about my Molecular class is this is the first semester it's being taught here, and by a brand new, first time professor.

I'm pretty sure every undergrad Science Major has to do this at one time or another, most of us several times.

I actually just did it this last semester and found it helpful, as things from A&P, Chem, and PathoPhys overlapped quite a bit.

YES ! If I ever read the words "transcription factor" again itll be too soon. The chapters are SOOOOO long and boring, they do about 100 experiements that I dont need to know, and I have to hunt for a single sentence that says something like " Thus, TAFIID and TBP bind at the TATA box"

Genetics
Human Physiology
Organic Chemistry II
Differential Equations

😎

I am thinking about taking General Chemistry 2, Molecular Biology, and Genomics. Also, I will take these with a Humanities class. What do you think and any one else who like to weigh in on this?

I actually took three science classes in two semesters junior year and I received a 3.8 both semesters. I found that based on my major there was a lot of overlap making it easier. This may or may not be the case for you, but either case it is doable.

LA 401 is cake. 😉

Is the crazy guy still teaching BioChem? Barbush?

Did Giachino whither away yet? I hate that dude.

Dr. G is still there. Dr. Barbush is hilarious, for a pointer on his powerpoints, he uses a Light Sabre from Toys R Us or something.

Fall Semester (19 credits):

Organic Chemistry 1
Organic Chemistry 1 Lab
Physics 1
Physics 1 Lab
Chemical Analysis
Calculus 1
Soc class

It was definitely overwhelming at times, but it is possible if you have to. This semester and the following one were two of my top three semesters (>3.9). I didn't have much of a life for a year basically, but once you resolve yourself to the fact that you will have ten times the work compared to most other students you can stop being bitter about it and give it the attention it needs. Also, knowing how to allocate your time and being an organized person really, really helps when you have that many science courses. However, if your like me and tend to be a procrastinator, then taking that many science courses will be like a crash course in time management 😛

I'll just be honest. If you wanna go to Med School, you better get used to it. It might be a good "prep" for down the road. I think we're taking "32 hours" this semester.

I never got to take one of Barbush's courses but always liked the guy.

There's a phrase about what you'd do or wouldn't do if someone was on fire that pertains to Dr. Giachino. 🙂

I remember some of the stories about Barbush going an entire lecture without saying a word. 🙂

I've done this all year

fall quarter I took O-chem and lab physics and lab, bio and lab

winter quarter I took O-chem and longer 2 credit hour lab, cell bio and physics and lab

spring quarter I am taking o-chem and even longer 3 credit hour lab, physics and lab and biochem

During this time I also studied for my mcat, took it and did all of my application stuff ( oh and worked part time during fall quarter)

Doable, go for it

I did it several times (including second semester senior year), and it sucked, but wasn't undoable. However, I wouldn't recommend it for your last semester of college. Way too many other distractions.

LOL, he starts every lecture saying "today in class.... we'll be having class". The other day he said "ubuquinone is a carrier, like someone probably sitting next to you is a carrier" LMAO, he said it without crackin a smile.

I took Chem I and II elsewhere, I dont know anything about Dr. G, except that his tests avgs are like in the 40s or 30s

My O-chem I prof regularly had tests where the class average was in the 40's. I owned that class.

One time, I was in my physics II prof's office to talk about some homework or something, and he took a phone call. Talked for a couple minutes and then ended the conversation.

"That was a colleague of mine who is teaching engineering physics this semester. The class average on his most recent exam was a 6"

A freaking 6. At what point do you decide that the test was just too hard? That means that there were people in the class who probably studied their asses off, took the exam, and got a 0.

So much for "partial credit rewarded"

Good choice. I have pretty much no use for that man.

I've never understood "teachers" that seem to get their jollies from making their test averages that low. It just shows that either 1. You aren't a very good teacher or 2. your kids aren't learning anythin....or both, which was often the case with Giachino. I learned absolutely NOTHING from that man other than how to make a 50 on a test and get a C. Oh, and that he's a dirty old man. Ever notice who he hand picks as his scholarship recipients?

I have no problem with professors that like to challenge their students, but this guy goes out of his way to make people look and feel stupid by being completely vague and being an all around horrid professor. Within months, I went from loving Chemistry to never wanting to take another Chemistry class again.

Congrats Gary, you're smarter than a bunch of college freshmen....what a tool.

LOL ! Imagine taking P-CHEM from him. OMG 👎

I've taken more than 18 credits of science for a few semesters. I got As in the classes where I shared personality traits with the teachers. But in classes where my classmates were very competitive and I did not have much in common with the teacher; I pulled off B's by using nemonics that I would write down straight from my short term memory.

It completely depends on what GPA you want, and if you think you can handle 3 classes where you may have competitve classmates and difficult teachers.

On the other hand, high course loads of science may be great preperation for MS.
