I was just curious what some of you do during your little/if any downtime. Online poker, golf, video games, naps, what strikes your fancy? I was hoping once I get there I could manage to watch at least a game or two of football on Saturdays, but who knows. I get the impression you go into hermit-mode your first two years.

You have to make time for whatver it is you want. I try to go out one night a week and visit my (long-distance) boyfriend once a month.

But as far as video games, my poor game cube is collecting dust under my bed. 🙁 And naps are very few and very far between.

You just need to make a schedule and try your hardest to stick to it...

Online poker is looking like it won't be a possibility pretty soon. Our govt snuck an anti-gambling bill onto the port-security bill which passed and is awaiting W's signature. Party poker, which has the largest marketshare, already has said they will no longer accept us players.

Unfortunately I knew about this. That's too bad, that was a great extra income. No one golfs here? You'll all be dentists, isn't it one of the pre-reqs for admission?

I try to do lots of things outside of school, because I always do really poorly if I'm not balanced. The only thing is that if you go out and get really involved with fun non-school things, you need to develop really, really efficient study habits (i.e. put a LOT of solid effort into an hour of studying.)

But you can absolutely pull it off!! The people who stay in their apts all the time don't necessarily do better. I joined a big chorus here in Buffalo and they rehearse for 3 hours every Wednesday, my boyfriend and I go to museums, the zoo, out to dinner a lot more than we should ($$$), plays, and out with friends.

For me, the big trick has been to think ahead of when you're study which topic, so you're not just winging it. Other than that, I've actually felt more relaxed than I thought I would and am having lots of fun. I guess we'll see what happens second year 😉

I totally agree with everyone. It is possible to have a life and to get good grades while in dschool. I'm in my first semester maintaining A's and B's (an A being 93%+) and still have time to hang out, go climbing, surf the net,and take naps!! Granted I'm only averaging about 5.5-6 hours of sleep a night, and I do study quite a bit. It is quite a bit harder than undergrad. But it is possilbe and IMPORTANT to balance work and play!

I agree with the balance. I am only in graduate school now (2nd time applying to dschool), but am now realizing how much more studying is required. I suppose not living in a fraternity and not DJing anymore help out with not being so distracted, but I do find myself wanting to do other things than study......golf, work out, surf sdn, etc.

So I'm beginning to learn the importance of balance and using my time wisely and efficiently. Some dental schools are located where you can partake in fun events (museums, plays, beach, mountains, etc). But there are others that are stuck in the middle of no where. I guess it's all what you make of it!

Still suprised to see there aren't many golfers here. I figured for sure we'd be talking short game strategies by now, hah.

I'm doing fine in my first semester. I'm pulling down all A's and I have plenty of free time. I never study on Fridays unless I have a really tough exam on Monday. I went to a big university with hard classes though. I took all the classes that people recommended I take (histology, biochem, etc), people in my class that went to small colleges and didn't take some of the recommended courses are struggling a bit more though. I see a few people who cry a lot after exams. *shrugs*

I take naps here and there throughout the week, I go to the gym 4 or 5 times a week, and I am currently remodeling the kitchen in my house...there is plenty of time for other things. I am in my second year and have something like a 3.95 GPA.
Use your time wisely...study between classes at school and don't waste you time with TV--- it will just make you fat and mindless.

We didn't even get cable - saves a good $60/month and then the option isn't even there 🙂 Good point!

Oh, and definitely hone in on the efficient studying (using between-class time or lunch wisely). The people who skip not absolutely mandatory classes to get together and study for exams seem to not get anything done....at least that's what I've observed! I'm much better studying on my own in my own little bubble.

👍 👍 👍 $18 for 3 Netflix/month = best splurge we've ever done! Some days we may only have time for an episode of something during dinner, but anything that is not a mesial height of contour is fine with me.

The school has an adult league hockey team I skate on every Sunday night. Occassional Guitar Hero jam sessions. There is time for other stuff, especially if you have no significant other.

No way, I would love that. I played in high school and would love an opportunity to play for fun. Where do you go to school? I would imagine in the northeast, Michigan/Minnesota. I think this would be a great way to throw some fun into the mix of studying

Guitar Hero rules!! Can't wait for number two. That reminds me, I've got to go pick my guitar up from tooth's place.

Really? I find I go out more since I have a live-in boyfriend. It's a good excuse to go out for dinner, go see a play, museums, other friends' houses, whatever....then again, he's not also in dental school so he's a good influence in making me realize there is another .0001% of the world out there that isn't dentistry at the moment. 🙄

I think it depends on the relationship, and whether you're single or not, there are definitely opportunities to feel balanced.

i love playing poker.
