I'm just curious as to how much time is given off to study for boards. Is it a pretty standard amount across all schools? Do you guys feel that you've been given ample time? wondering if it's something to consider when deciding on schools...thanks!

more than ample time at UMDNJ-SOM, we get a month with a review course before part 1, a month of review course and another month if needed for step 2. this is a VERY important question and was extremely helpful as I could study solely for boards without worrying about doing a rotation during this time.

At NYCOM we get off on May 13th, I think the Kaplan review course starts that very week. We have to take the boards before July so we get around a month.

everyone will give time off for part/step 1, find out during your interviews about part/step 2.

KCUMB gives just over 4 weeks off (and a really laid back summer session of rotation prep after that, so you can continue to prepare for boards into that as well if you want).

But I would absolutely not use this as a reason to choose a school. Choose a program because you feel most comfortable at. Choose a program that you feel has the best instruction.

Every 2nd year student finds time to tailor their own board preparation schedule. You will too.

On Thursday April 17, 2008 we take our last test. The next day, we take the NBME comprehensive basic sciences exam. The following Monday we begin board review. It lasts through May 9th. We have take the ACLS test one day the next week and are free to take COMLEX any time after that. A voluntary board review begins May 12th and runs til the end of the month. If you have a PBL score of 75 or less, you may be required to attend that one too. Rotations begin June 2nd. You are encouraged to take COMLEX at the end of May, but it is possible to take it later.
