time in US for Australian Training Program

I'm studyin med (2nd yr) @ Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

Its a 5 yr undergraduate course, i took a mandatory year off before i started.

In our 5th year of our course, our year will probably be split up into 7, 6week blocks of electives and selectives (have to choose one from a list, as the name suggests).

One of these can be spent overseas, and as I'm beginning to develop a bit of an interest in trauma, I'd like to know where a good place to go in the US for experience. (I know it's like two years, but i need to start saving, i want to go to south america too!) This is to check out the US medical system and for some good experience.

I'm also interested... as a part of our specialty training programs in Aus, the colleges of surgeons and physcians recommends overseas experience. Do i need to sit all of the exams (USMLE etc) if i'm going to do like a year or so in a specialised unit eg trauma surgery unit as a senior registrar/resident?

I'm @ Tas in the 6 year program...
this is completely off topic but do you know anything about internships? I have heard from a lot of sixth years here that internationals get them...but I just want to confirm this?

Do you know anything about this process?

Staring with your last question first...

To work as a resident, especially a senior one, you would have to have a medical license. I frankly don't know how you would get one without having the ECFMG certificate (which requires the exams). However, would be best to check with specific programs just to be sure. You may also find it difficult to work an entire year in one place on one rotation - ie, as a visiting elective, rather than as a fellowship.
