Anyone got any good suggestions for spending a year off? I decided to defer med school for a year for personal reasons, but now I really feel the need to get involved in something.

Spend time with family and travel like someone lit a fire under your pants. That's what I'd do. 🙂

Looking at it now, I'd work if I were you, unless you have untold millions to rely on from great savings or rich parents. Travelling is indeed a great idea, but that costs money that you may need later. If you have no financial worries, travel your ass off. Or just sit around. I think I'll miss that when I'm knee deep in Biochemistry.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

just keep in mind that most med schools will ask you to talk about what you did in your time off on thier secondaries. so, if you sit on your ass, you'll have a harder time saying you did something with your free time.

do something special.
If I had a year off I would join a disaster team. That way I could see the world while keeping my medical skills (MEDICal) sharp. Not to mention all the good you can do for people in dire need.

If I were you, I would go ahead and become qualified as an EMT-B. You will see alot of things, and it will open your eyes towards medicine.
