I considering waiting to apply until the summer after my senior year (I am a sophomore right now). I want to do this because I would love to have some time to myself to travel the world. I am just wondering if this is looked down upon by dental schools, do they want to see me in school during this period of time? Will they see me as someone who is not completely dedicated to dental school because I am not applying during my senior year?

id like some info about this too please 🙂

time off from school will not matter. in fact you can actually use it to your advantage to get experience in a lot of different areas. in fact, i think it could help you now that i think about it. it will show dental school adcoms that you have lived in the real world, know whats out there, and still want to do dentistry. every school has people who come in after taking many many years off. hell, i think avg entering age now is around 24ish. So not everyone comes right out of undergrad. As long as you have the credentials, the necessary application materials, and solid interviewing skills. how you spend your time is not a factor. apply when you want to apply

I'm going to be taking a year off. I will be working at the hospital that I'm currently working at, studying for and taking the DAT, and getting some much needed vacation time in.

I think that if you want to take a year off, do it. Just make sure you actually DO something, don't just sit around being a lazy bum. 🙂

thanks guys 🙂

I think it's a great thing to do. Adcoms really want a class of a diverse group of students with different backgrounds and experiences. Just have someting interesting or at least productive to tell them when they ask you what you did during your time off. at least half of my class did not go straight from undergrad to dental school.
