This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
3 years: FP, Peds, IM, some ER programs
4 years: PMR, Anesthesia, ophtho, neuro, psych, derm, med-peds, Ob/Gyn, some ER programs
5 years: surgery (some), ENT, radiology, integrated plastics, urology (?), ortho (?)
6+ years: neurosurg, some surgery programs

Fellowships add 1-3 years of training (generally speaking).

Not sure about "weirder" combined residencies like neuro-psych, IM-psych, etc.

Hello:

Where can I find a list of most of the residencys' time-to-completion? I just want to find out which residencies are shortest vs longest, etc.

Thank you!
:luck:

Although there are many resources available online, its easier for me to write them than to find the the websites:

Pediatrics: 3
Internal med: 3
Family Prac: 3
EM: 3 or 4
Surgery: Minimum 5, some up to 7 years due to research years.
OB/GYN: 4
Radiology: 5 (1 year internship, 4 years radiology)
Anesthesia: 4 (1 year inernship, 3 years anesthesia)
Pathology: 4
Psych: 4
Neurology: 4 (1 year internship, 3 years neuro)
Neurosurgery: Usually around 7, +possible research years.
Orthopedic surgery: Minimum 5, +possible research years.
ENT: 5, (1 year gen surg) +possible research years.
Urology: 5 (1-2 years gen surg) +possible research years.
Optho: 5 (1 year internship, 4 years optho)
PM&R: 4 (1 year internship, 3 years PMR)
Derm: 4 (1 year internship, 3 years derm)
Rad onc: 5 (1 year internship, 4 years rad onc)

Phew, that was exhuasting. There are other less common residencies and combinations too.

Edit: No wonder Smurfette is gonna be a surgeon, so much more efficient format.

Aw, thanks WBC. Too bad I left so I can't get radiology hints from you when following up on my patients tests!

What can I say, the radiologists I've met like to do things in checklist format to be consistent and not miss anything. Surgeons are all about maximizing their efficiency. 😀 (esp poor interns like me!)

As a random note, I think path residencies vary by type---anatomic vs clinical vs combined. (I may have not named both types correctly). But I don't know the training length differences.
