Time to cook in vet school?

I'm not a huge cook (although sometimes I wish i was!) but of course everyone has to eat. I remember while in undergrad I felt so strapped for time and barely had a moment to make a good meal. I have a feeling the same will be true when I start vet school next month however, I would love to find some good, healthy and fast meals that I could create while pressed for time.

I do think that eating well can help one study and pay attention better. Do any current vet students have tips on how to eat well while in vet school? Does anyone have any good recipes that they would like to share? I'm going to try to avoid relying on pizza and frozen meals this year.
 
So far i've just been making a large dish of something healthy on Sunday and have been eating it throughout the week. There's time to make dinner after school (but not every day.) There's definitely time for things that are important to you. I've been making time everyday to work out. Don't drown yourself in studying
 
I love to cook! In undergrad, I would make a large meal and eat the leftovers for the rest of the week. Lasagna is a good choice for this. I also have a recipe called chicken taco rice that is super easy and really good for leftovers. I will give you the recipe if you are interested. Also cooking something like a whole chicken can be good. You can use the leftover cooked chicken for sandwiches, salads and soups throughout the week. And if you don't want to eat the same thing all week, you could freeze some of the cooked stuff to eat later. (Just make sure you label and date it) You can also use a crockpot to cook your food throughout the day and have it ready when you come home. I also recommend a george foreman grill. It cooks really quickly and is healthy too. This thread is making me hungry🙂
 
I was thinking about doing marinades a lot and grilling chicken and pork chops. Or crock pot recipes. Or buy like, 6 pounds of pork shoulder, cook it all at once on a Sunday or something, and eat that throughout the week.

Not sure you could do foie gras with creme brulee but for regular meals, you probably got time.

I try to use up leftovers when I can, so I come up with all kinds of omelet, buritos, and stir-fy combos.

I just pick a meat at the beginning of the week and go with it typically.
Crock pot roast (bbq beef, stir frys, tacos, buritos, soups)
Chicken or turkey (chicken n' noodles, enchilada caseroles, shepards pie)
Ham is pretty versatile but I usually just use it for breakfast buritos and sandwishes.
Crock pot red or green chili (chili burgers, tater-tot caserole, tacos, put it in a rice soup, smothered buritos)

Just some ideas to spread some leftovers out throughout the week. I really am not much of a leftover eater of the same dish more than once, so I try to get creative 🙂
 
I really like the cheesy chicken and rice casserole recipe that can be found on the back of a campbells cream of chicken soup can. It's like 2 mins. of prep and then it cooks for like 45 min. It gives you enough time to do stuff while it's cooking because you don't need to check it all the time. Oh and it's really tasty!
 
If worst comes to worst, at least you'll get a ton of free pizza. 🙂

Oh my gosh yes!! So far this week, we have gotten free food 4 of the 5 days of school. Next week we get at least 2 days of free food. Lots of pizza and sandwiches

You can also do it with ANY other meat or fish - I've used chicken, beef, scallops, and other fish. You just have to cook the rice the same and modify the meat. I also use more peas and also add in corn to the rice, so I get more veggies and can use less rice. It's a great, easy recipe and you can make a TON of rice cheaply, and I buy the big things of chicken broth. I love this stuff.
 
I cook a balanced meal almost every night. I like crockpot recipes, and also recommend keeping frozen veggies and frozen chicken breasts for a quick stirfry alongside some rice. I also make sweet potato oven fries at least once a week, and pair them with a salad and/or protein of some sort. I recommend getting a george foreman grill...you can make a quick burger or chicken breast, make paninis or grilled cheese, etc.

I get really tired of eating the same thing every day for a week.
 
I definitely recommend a crock pot! It's nice to throw something in before you leave in the morning and come back to a meal in the evening. One really easy recipe is BBQ chicken--I use a whole cut up chicken, one bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce (Kraft is cheap and works well) and about 1/4 cup of Coca-Cola. Cook on low for about 8 hours, and that's it. It keeps really well in the fridge too, and makes good pulled BBQ chicken sandwiches. 🙂
 
I find that sticking to the five ingredient rule works really well for finding recipes that you can cook easily. If it has more than five ingredients....don't make it. >< There are tons of recipes out there though that have few ingredients and directions like "mix ingredients, bake on 350 degrees for 20 minutes." It makes life very easy and you can study while it cooks.
 
Definitely make use of left overs. even if you spend three hours making a large meal to last you throughout the week, it will be well worth it. Remember, even though something may be quick and easy (mac&cheese/pizza, ect) it might not always be healthy for you.
 
one word: soup. so easy to make and pairs well with everything.
 
I am a big fan of when I do cook a decent healthy meal I make a larger portion than what I will eat so I can freeze left overs. I freeze them in tupperwares and then in the morning before I leave for school I take what I am going to eat out of the freezer and leave it to defrost in the fridge. I am a big fan of using my crock pot to make and freeze soups, chilli, lazy lasagna, stews etc.

I have never done this but a friend of mine will make mashed potatoes and freeze them in silicon muffin cups or freeze ice cream scoops of rice on wax paper. After they are frozen she places them in zip lock bags in the freezer so she has individual portions to use as as she needs.
