Aloha!

So I am planning to apply to dental school this upcoming cycle and am very interested in the HSPS scholarship. I am just a little confused about the timeframe of when to apply for the HPSP. I know that if I get into a dental school this upcoming cycle i'll know by December 2016. Do I apply for the HPSP around the same time I do for dental school? Or do I apply after I am accepted into a dental school? Thank you so much for your guys help and advice!

Start your paperwork in July/August. Try to get your meps physical by Sept/Oct so everything will be ready to go on Dec 1st.

Thanks for the fast reply! So should I contact my local recruiter now? And is it possible to apply for all three branches, army, navy, Air Force? I know it is very competitive and I want the best chances of getting the scholarship. Do you know the average gpa and Dat score?

GPA and DAT averages are different for each branch. You can apply to all 3, but the branches will most likely become mad that you are doing so. Some have ethical recruiters that don't mind, but that's usually not the case.

Just always shoot for the highest GPA and DAT. If you have a 22AA, you can skip the Letter of Acceptance requirement for the Navy and board as early as October.

I would just go ahead and talk with a recruiter ASAP to establish a relationship. Many people (as well as myself) ended up having to change recruiters. If I started late in the game, I would have had no chance at all.

How come you had to change recruiters? Also does the recruiter you have impact your chances at all? Is it is a committe beyond the recruiter that decides who is granted the scholarship??

Also in order to be accepted for the scholarship do you have to meet their height and weight requirement right when you do the physical? Or is there a grace period that you can make the necessary changes? Would not meeting those requirements effect my chances?

Not sure about the height/weight, but I remember seeing a post about it. Try a search for more info. You may have a pending health clearance until you meet the requirements but I cannot speak on that. A passing physical is definitely required for the application, though.

My recruiter went MIA for a long time after I was about half way done with my app. I kept trying to get in contact with him with no luck, and I finally found another recruiter that has been excellent. If I had worked with him from the get-go, I would most likely already have received the scholarship.... but my recruiter is still confident I will get it.

The only impact your recruiter has is to work with you as a team to get everything in. Some have incompetent recruiters, and some have excellent ones. As long as you get all of your documents into the boards on time then it will be up to a committee to decide if they want to give you the scholarship or not.

Thanks so much for the help! If you don't mind me asking, what are your stats?

22AA and a 3.5GPA. I was praised by recruiters for my test scores, but they made it seem like the 3.5 was just average.

Nice score man! I hope I can do as well as you did. How long did you study for?

I studied for about half of a summer. So let's see... About 2 months. I was hardcore studying though
