There is no one-size-fits-all answer. If you need to make non-refundable travel reservations now, I would look at all the schools to which you've applied and determine when they start. Take your trip in the weeks prior to the earliest date.

You dont.... most schools will require students to have a final transcripts and graduation certified before starting.
