What is the rule of thumb for keeping a good timing for verbal on the mcat?

I try to average 7.5 minutes at most per passage.

@Dreamstoo Are you just a fast reader who can remember most of what you read? It takes me about 4 mins on average to get through the passages and I find myself having to refer back to the passage a lot when answering questions so it takes me anywhere form 7 and half mins to 11 mins to finish a passage (depending how difficult it is).

Depends on the difficulty of the passage. I do take 3-4 minutes to get through the passages. If the questions are generalized, I finish them within 2 minutes or so. Little more detail it could go up to 4 minutes (8 minutes total).

So basically for the non-detail oriented passages, you read the passage and get the main point so you're able to answer the questions based on your understanding of the author's main idea? I find myself referencing back to the passage way too much which takes up a lot of time.

For detail oriented ones I tend to spend more time on. For example, I just spent a little over 6 minutes just now on a verbal passage that was mostly general. Out of the 5 questions, only one I had to go back and look for it because I had good maps for each paragraph (aka the main idea).
