Hi everyone,

I am in the process of scheduling my fourth year rotations, and am curious as to when I should do my sub-internship. I am going into internal medicine, so obviously I will be doing a medicine sub-i. I have decided to do my sub-i at my home institution, although I have no desire to stay here for residency.

I will be taking off the month of July to study for Step 2, and will be doing an away rotation for one month in August or September. Does conventional wisdom suggest that I do my sub-i before November in order to have it on my transcript and possibly get a good recommendation letter out of it? Or does it not really matter? At this point, I am feeling the fatigue from third year and really don't like the idea of having the pressure of excelling on my sub-i and including it in my application, but at the same time I am certainly willing to do that if it is important for my application.

Thanks in advance!

Why so soon? I would probably consider doing something clinical that early

and will be doing an away rotation for one month in August or September.

Conventional wisdom is to do your home sub-I prior to doing audition months so as to max out your experience (and thus ability to shine on aways)

Yes - SubI grades are generally right up there with third year grades in terms of importance. and SubI's are probably the best place to get LORs

My Step 1 score isn't as good as I would like, so I need to include it in my application. My school will include the Step 2 score in my Dean's letter provided that it is taken early enough. Plus, it makes sense to take it while the material from third year is relatively fresh on my mind.

My audition rotation will not be an inpatient general medicine rotation, so I do not see how the sub-i will be very helpful.

This is a valid point. The only problem is that I need to coordinate both the away rotation as well as the sub-i schedules in order to get letters and have them on my transcript and residency application. Step 2 is obviously just as (if not more) important than getting both of these rotations completed by application time. Hmm...
