When is the best time to take the USMLE Step I? I know that for residencies in EM/IM and EM/Peds (ACGME)that the USMLE is helpful if not required for most. Also, Does your first year of a 5 year Residency program count for your AOA internship year? I know they just changed the rule on that. Thanks Peter--- Soon to be CCOM student.

EM/Peds on the allopathic route is extremely competative and difficult to get for a DO and the USMLE would be an absolute must...preferably scoring above the mean. I took the USMLE 3 days before the COMLEX.
If you are interested in those programs (there are very few combined programs on the allopathic side) go to www.saem.org very complete listings.
