Hello

Next year, I'll be taking one class and one lab as retakes. I will have plenty of time, so I need to buff up my application a bit more. I have tons of volunteer experience, but none of that is hospital volunteering. I also haven't shadowed a doctor yet.

So, I'm basically at 0 clinical experience, but I have a long time before I'm applying. While I'm taking this class, I could possibly work as a scribe. Would this be good clinical experience? I could also volunteer at the hospital or shadow on my off days. That is my current plan: scribe, and then volunteer or shadow on off days.

But is shadowing necessary if I'm scribing? Doesn't scribing essentially mean shadowing a doctor while taking his notes and getting paid for it if you wanna boil it down to the crude definition?

Of course, I still need to make sure I shadow a D.O. doc, but I was just looking for some tips.

Definitely go for it, scribing is great clinical exposure. I worked as a scribe/physician tech for a private group of ER docs in TX and loved it. I learned A TON of stuff and saw A TON of stuff. And I would say that it counts as shadowing for sure, I was able to get the director of the ED (an MD) and a DO to write me great letters of rec. And since you say you'll be working for a somehwhat good chunk of time, it will be great for the apps. I was asked about it in all of my interviews.

hospital volunteer 100+ hrs patient contact
shadow 40-60+ hrs include diff physicians and def include primary care physician
community service 50+ hrs such as shelter work etc..
