Hi all,

I need some tips for developing relationships with my science professors that will yield a strong LOR. I'm a senior and I have a couple of potential LOR's already but a couple professors that I took my year of gen bio and gen chem from were either fired or resigned a couple years ago. I have a couple more hard science courses left and I'm hoping I can get an LOR from both of them so that I have options if for some reason, the other LOR's fall through.

Thanks for the help!

Talk to professors after class to ask questions, meet with them outside of class, go out to a lunch/dinner to talk about what they do for research/hobbies, and participate in class discussions. At least those are the things that worked for me!

I've been going to office hours to ask questions but I feel like if I ask them anything other than what we talk about in lecture, I'm wasting their time because they're very busy people.

You don't need to spend a lot of time talking to them. Just 1-2 min of non-course work talk.

Also... when you request a letter of recommendation, here is what you should do:

1. Send in a small picture of your self to remind them who you are.
2. List 5 things or so that you would like them to include in their LOR.
3. Drop in reminders so they can remember you.

Source: I write a **** ton of LOR - and some are from students I taught 2 years ago and I have no idea who they are anymore. Usually if they remind me, I'll remember, or if I don't, I'll look up their grade and write it based on their 5 bullet points (usually not as good of a LOR - and I let them know).

@moisne Thank you for the tips! Any ideas on what to ask them to include? Work ethic, passion?
