Hey there! We’re a group of OMS interns at JPS Hospital. We want to be active on SDN and participate in discussions, but we are so busy being in and out of the OR. Therefore, we made a community account that we will all post with from time to time. Feel free to ask us questions or send us messages. We’ll try to respond when we can!

Our first question: Anyone have tips for creating a good work/life balance? Luckily, we rotate being on call between the five interns, so even though you’re working really hard when you’re on call, you only have to do it every 5th day, which is nice for a program.

Some days are more stressful than others, though. How do you keep stress to a minimum?

Compartmentalization!
If you are not on site, forget it.

When I was in Ortho residency .... the work/study was my life. That's why your there. When you graduate and start working .... then you get to balance work/life again, but work initially will be important to pay off debt and to live. So ... this work/life balance never really ends until you retire.

You have a long journey ahead of you. :)

DB says - Just know it gets better. Every week you get faster, learn more, sleep more, and so there’s more and more balance as time goes on.

There’s really no way to prepare for and be ready for residency or internship. The best thing is to just do it. Doing a busy one like this will make sure you’re ready to hit the ground running when you match with a residency. -- BR
