Tips on studying for a written vs M/C test in dental school

I have been doing pretty well on multiple choice tests. However, I recently got back a terrible mark for a biomaterials test that required written responses. I think part of the reason is that I am not used to writing out full sentences for a test.

Do you have any suggestions on how to study for a written test? I assume the strategy would be different than for a multiple choice or short answer test.
