Hello sdners,
Need some advice. I am two years removed of undergraduate at Queens in Canada and have been trying to get into med school in Canada. I have a strong 3.9 gpa but have stuggled with mcat verbal reasoning and it hasn't been enough for schools up here. I applied and was accepted to a few osteopathic medical schools 2 years back in the states but opted against it because I know I want to work in Canada. As a result, I am just not sure at this point what to do. Should I continue trying in Canada because it will ensure job security and education in the country I want to practice in eventually or is it better to look elsewhere. For me the elsewhere options would be Ireland and Australia. If you were in my boat what would you guys do?

Go to DO school in the States. You can practice in Canada with a DO degree.

What is the real advantage of DO for Canadians? The way I see it, as a DO, yes you will have a little advantage being American but are still one step down from US MDs. Aren't grads from countries that have well reputable schools going to be similar in terms of 'residency director bias' to DO? Won't some residency directors favour IMGs who are MD/MBBS over DOs, and vice versa? Also if you go to a school in Ireland you have like a 70% chance of matching back to Canada. With a DO the numbers are pretty much non-existant no?

It doesn't matter if you're an MD, DO, MBBS you'll still be an IMG. At least with DO you'll be close to home and get to train in the states which is a major advantage. On top of that you can do residency in the States in case you don't get into Canada right away.

Yeah definitely try for DO if you don't mind the title (trust me, there are people to this day who would rather go the IMG route than be called a DO). As for reputation, Irish schools and then Australian schools...that's the usual picking order.

I have read/heard some amazing things about the University of Limerick's medical school and how its like pretty much identical to a Canadian med school like McMaster, where students write the same progress exams that limerick actually gets from Mcmaster. Can anyone comment on this?
